Welding Question?

Starting to plan out building a Shifter Kart. I will start off with a used kart and mod it from there with the engine that I come up with.

Here is my question, most race kart frames are Chromoly. All I have is a Mig welder 220v. Can I weld the Chromoly with a Mig? Can I weld Mild Steel brackets or DOM tube to the Chromoly with the Mig? What are the short falls of not using a TIG?

Thanks,

While TIG is the preferred method, MIG will work fine, but as always, the quality of the weld will only be as good your as your skills. Yes you can weld regular mild steel onto CM without issue.

I don't MIG weld anymore but my rule of thumb is that if you would get hurt/injured if it were to break then it needs to be tig'd. There is nothing wrong with MIG welding 4130 but safety components are held to a higher standard.

You can use an oxy-acetylene torch to weld it as well. You'll probably have better luck with that than with the MIG setup.
