Can you see if the flywheel is chewed up?
You have a Vette?I'm not that sophisticated. Could this be something other than the starter? What sort of life expectancy should be expected from that part? It's a 2000 Vette.
I wouldnt be that worried abut the flywheel, unless the starter itself damaged it......I would pull the starter and check flywheel visially when its out...Sometmes there is an access port also on the bottom of the belle housing. Sounds to me that the starter has gotten loud,or its not making proper contact with the teeth on the flywheel in which case THAt could damage the flywheel. Its not ucommin for a starter to fail....Ive seem them go at 50k miles...Ive seem them to at 150K.......It really depends.
:werd:
Is there something wrong with my suggestion?

YesYou have a Vette?
It sounds to me like the bendix in the starter isn't fully engaging so the starter gear isn't contacting the flywheel teeth all the way.Pull the starter and shine a flash light up on the flywheel and have somebody turn over the motor by hand to inspect the flywheel. Also check the starter motor teeth. You can try bench testing the starter to verify if it is the motor itself making the noise. Could be a worn bushings in the motor case.
