It's the Leslie - Bellevue Rd exit. You go west 5 minutes from 127 and it's on the right just off the road. It's like 4100 Bellevue Rd, Leslie, MI if you need an address for GPS.

Two Onondaga Township officials are fighting to keep their seats after a dispute over a dragway sparked a recall campaign.

Now voters will get the chance to decide whether to remove township Clerk Diane Johnson and Treasurer Mary Jane Hector from their positions.

A recall proposal that will appear on Tuesday’s ballot states that Johnson and Hector violated township and state zoning rules and disregarded the township master plan when voting on the dragway.

Hector and Johnson said they did vote in favor of a special use permit that would allow the dragway to operate.

Hector wrote in a rebuttal to the recall proposal that the permit for the dragway went through the planning commission first and its operation seemed like it would be harmonious with the area, which is mostly rural. Johnson also wrote that she was supportive of the dragway and believed it could help support local businesses.

Johnson said there was nothing illegal about what she and Hector did.

But recall supporters say township ordinances and the master plan do not allow for the operation of the dragway, which could lower neighboring property values and create a fire and contamination hazard.

The dragway issue was merely the catalyst for the recall campaign, recall supporters wrote in a letter to township residents.

Supporters also allege Johnson did not properly record meeting minutes and both she and Hector have ignored legal advice.

Township resident Steve Klein, who helped spearhead the recall effort, said supporters collected about 300 signatures each for Hector and Johnson from residents in favor of the recall.

“We’re getting a very positive response,” said Klein, who has lived near the dragway site for about 30 years. “We have many supporters.”

He said it was his sincere hope that Hector and Johnson would be removed from office.

Johnson said she and Hector have been trying to talk to residents about the issue and have sent letters to voters explaining their side and clarifying points made by recall supporters.

“We want people to know the truth about what they were told,” Johnson said. “I did my job. I’m responsible to do what I think is best for the township.”

Hector, who has served with the township for 34 years and has never faced recall, said residents were lied to about the recall by circulators to try to get them to sign the petition. Klein denied that and said supporters were able to back up every claim they made.

“Hopefully the truth gets out there,” Johnson said. “I have to trust the voters.”

Hmm...vote to let dragway operate, and get recalled??? And siting it as a fire and hazardous issue?? reallly, because milan and all other tracks are toxic dumps with fires a blazing. Ignorance is bliss....

I too am suspicious and doubt the full, unbiased truth was disclosed to the petitioners. I haven't been following this as closely as some. But, I get the impression from what I have seen that Klein is the type of guy that will spin anything and everything so that is beneficial to his efforts and leave out the rest. To me, it's like some guy witnesses a rabid, wild animal charging a little kid with intent to do harm, someone shoots the animal dead before it gets to the kid, and then the observing guy goes off screaming, "That asshole just shot that beautiful animal!" Nevermind the fact that it was sick and had obvious intent to do harm. But, if you ask him, he's right. He's stating a fact. The guy did shoot the animal. Same thing with the drag strip...he's out on his soap box about how this strip is so detrimental to the area. But, it's really him just being selfish. He doesn't want it there - and that's the bottom line. The "development plan" is just his excuse. I mean...after all, if you were going according to a plan and an improvement was revealed to you, would you ignore the improvement??? This strip would bring jobs and money to the area. That sounds like an improvement to me. At the end of the day, it sounds to me like he's got nothing else going on in his life...so this is his agenda...his busy work. Total BS. I guess that's just my $0.02.
