Correct, I posted the part of the law that defines a SBS above. A rifle must be 30".
Also, I don't think you can simply register a rifle as a pistol, it has to be one from the start. The manufacturer has to specify rifle or pistol, and I think the receiver has to be marked as a pistol. "Once a rifle, always a rifle"
If you're going through all the trouble, IMO it would only be worth it for something like this:
But that would be illegal in Michigan either way, so what's the point.

That's the third time that same article has been posted/quote in this thread. Read it again. It literally says a shotgun with a 18.5" with overall length of 28.5 is legal (that's under 30")
The Remington 870P shotgun has a barrel 18 inches in length and an overall length of 28.5 inches with the stock folded, and, therefore, it is not a short-barreled shotgun.
Like I said, you can walk into a sporting goods store (or Wal-mart if they sell shotguns), and buy one with nothing but a NICS check.

A firearm containing a stock capable of being contracted or folded to an overall length of 30 inches or less and being fully operable in such contracted or folded condition is a pistol requiring licensure for purchase, carrying or transport, and is subject to safety inspection.
Pistol grip shotgun doesn't have a stock...

Good news. I just got off the phone with my local PD's "gun law expert" officer who just told me, and he also read from the posted law itself, and said that so long as the barrel is at least 18" and the OAL is at least 26", a shotgun does NOT need to be registered as a pistol in MI.

While you're holding the pistol grip? You must have loooong thumbs. You basically have to take your hand off the grip and go up, hit the safety, then go back down.

Got a pistol grip Mossberg sitting 2' from me, next to the bed... and I have no problems reaching the safety.

Yeah, I don't get it. I have what I think are normal-to-large hands for a man (not oddly large by any stretch) and I don't see how the Mossberg safety is a difficult one to access while keeping both hands on the gun. :shrug:
I'm talking about holding on to the pistol grip, thumb wrapped around, finger able to be put on the trigger. You'd have to bring half your hand up over the receiver to hit the safety.
Look at this:
I prefer the 870 because you can't just hit it with your finger and you don't have to change your grip.
