Wall mounted TV wiring options

Long story short, I got into a discussion at work about mounting a TV on a wall and hiding all of the connections etc.

He is very certain that he needs a 4k HDMI cable. Is there a difference in HDMI cable ratings? I have been reading that Hi-speed rated will work with 1080P up to 4K.

The other part of the discussion was about surge protection and the inability to mount a surge protector on a wall and hide it. So we stumbled on outlet-surge protectors. Any experience with them?

What kind of faceplates do you all prefer? The wire brush style that any/every wire can come through or the wall plates with dedicated jacks (audio/HDMI etc)
 
I got most of the stuff for mine through monoprice.com. I made my own receptacle for behind the TV, then ran everything to the basement where I have the DVD player, stereo, etc. I'm not done with everything yet, but the install looks clean with no wires below the TV. I ran HDMI, optical, co-ax, and I think a set of RCA jacks down there, and I plan on running everything through the receiver to switch video between sources.
 
I had to make my own wallplate, they didn't offer one a double gang with what I wanted. I just bought one with knock-outs on it & then got the corresponding jacks I needed
 
I didnt run any hdmi's (yet) , but I did use a recessed outlet box assembly that supports a mass amount of cables types and supports two regular sized 20 amp duplex receptacles. Ran into a situation involving a double wall stud and had to omit one duplex, but I didn't need it for use.

Like most things in HT, the sky is the limit. I personally have all of my equipment in a hallway cabinet. A dedicated 20A circuit feeds a shelf-mount APC H15 Power Conditioner in the cabinet, and all of my equipment in there plugs into the APC. I then have a short power feed cable from the APC to a separate power inlet receptacle (think wall plug with male prongs), 12ga romex through the wall, and terminates in a Leviton 47617-REB (R.E.B Recessed Low Profile Entertainment Box). The REB is basically a 9"x9" recessed electrical wall box that allows you to mount up to 4 gangs of receptacles within it - either line voltage (e.g. TV power), or low voltage. For the low voltage side, you can either buy the low voltage cover plate(s) with the punch down modules, or I just bought a rubber grommet cover and just pulled all of my cables directly through w/o terminating and jumpering (I didn't want the loss).

A simpler solution is to get a purpose made, recessed electrical box/receptacle that has the surge suppressor built in, and also has some provision for the low voltage cables. Although I prefer my configuration since I have more faith in my APC power conditioner to protect the TV vs. a much smaller, cheaper surge plug.
