I just added AVG and Ad-Aware to my wifes computer but, Vista will not let me update. Does anybody know what setting I need to change in order to run the updates?

You should modify the OS setting to XP :D

Are you trying to update the AV software or Vista itself?

The AV software. It tells me to check the internet connection which is working fine. There has to be a toggle or something preventing the download but I can't find it.

Check your Vista firewall and see if your AV program has permission to make outbound connections. If that dont work, look at your router...you might have to forward a port or 2.

I "unblocked" these programs under the exceptions tab in the firewall settings but, that did nothing. What does forwarding a port do?

Routers close most all ports by default. Look at the documentation for the AV software and it should tell you which ports it uses to make outbound connections. On your router, you would go to the port forwarding menu, enter the IP address of the machine youre using, set TCP and/or UDP request, and fill in the number for which port the software uses.

It's possible that their servers are down temporarily which happens a lot.

Try again in a few hours and if it still doesn't work then try fixing it somehow.

Thanks. I am currently running the AV with the old definitions. I will find the port numbers and open them when it is done running.

I tried to update them yesterday as well. I doubt both servers have been down for two days. I was assuming it was the OS but it might be the ports with my new router. I think I had an issue with my old computer after I switched routers. I don't care much about that computer so I just ignored it.

mine is doing the same thing. its a problem with the software, I think. the progress bar for the download never starts. Even if I d/l the update's manually and tell it to look in the folder where they are, it just hangs.

I need a fix too.

Anything can get rooted, including Linux. Proper precautions need to be taken regardless of what you're running.

For sure. I just meant that in general, because there arent nearly as many Linux viruses as there are Windows.
