USED SOLID CAM with NEW lifters

You mean solid roller right? Nobody uses solid flat tappets anymore do they :faint:

Not much of a break in really needed with a roller cam, the lifters will be fine just set the lash right of course.

lol.. yes solid flat tappet sir., some people still use those haha.

roller cams don't need break-in, I wouldn't ask about a breaking in a used roller cam with new roller lifters.

Comp Cams told me its a big no no using new lifters on a broken in flat tappet. Atleast thats what I remember. And make sure you go with a good lifter 80% of cam failures have been because of the lifters. I had to remove my inner spring and add a additive to the oil.

hmmm I'm getting away with this right now. The cam in my current motor was in the one I broke last year. I just tossed some new lifter in it and broke it in without the inner springs.

I used Rotella T for break in. I think the higher zinc and phosphorous is better for the flat tappet cams.

I just did a quick search on it and read Rotella was supposed to be reducing the levels this year due to the cats in the new diesel crap. Not sure if or when it's going to actually happen though.

It did happen, I used the Comp Cams break in lube, it full of Zinc ect. I still use it with every oil change.

Huh, I guess I should have saved my money and bought some new lifters rather then a new cam and lifters :faint:

Do not reuse that camhaft with new lifter. The odds of it working are about 10% at best from what I have seen over the years. for as cheap as solid mechanical grinds are nowadays just splurge the $ on a new camshaft.

Man you guys got me scared now, The problem with ordering a new cam is time. That'll be another week at least to have one ground up for it.

I just don't know if its worth the risk of fucking the motor up to save a week. :icon_frow

If you call comp and order the cam today it'll ship by monday. No it is not worth risking a very nasty fialure that will take out bearings and journals for 1 week IMO.

(b) Note: Always use new lifters on a new flat tappet cam. If you are removing a good used flat tappet cam and lifters and are planning to use them again in the same (or another) engine, you must keep the lifters in order as to what lobe of the cam they were on. The lifter breaks-in to the specific lobe it is mated with and it can't be changed. If the used lifters get mixed up, you should discard them and install a new set of lifters and break the cam in again as you would on a new cam and lifters. You can use new lifters on a good used cam, but never try to use used lifters on a new cam.
