UBER - Who uses it?

Have heard good things and looking to utilize UBER here soon I think. Taking the wife Downtown and don't want to worry about parking or driving after a few pops! (signs of getting older-er)

Just downloaded the app and set up an account! Pricing looked very reasonable...

What is the normal wait time or lead time needed to set a trip up?
Likes/Dislikes, etc?

Thanks

Used both uber and lyft while we were in Vegas. So much better than the cabs. And cheaper. I recommend downloading both apps so you can compare prices. Depending on day of time I noticed lyft to be Cheaper than uber sometimes. Cool thing about both apps you can get an estimate fare before you commit

I use it a ton for personal and business, you can also preschedule trips.
Generally what is the timing from Schedule to Pickup (approx)

I may end up pre-scheduling if I can hammer down the details (Meeting a bunch of other couples down there)

You can't pre schedule. Pickup depends on how much demand there is in the area compared to available drivers. During peak time prices go up. That's why you get both uber and lyft. One may have more drivers available than the other

I use Uber in Florida for the same drinking and driving reason, but wait time for me has been no more then 15 minutes... A few of the drivers will even give you their phone number to call instead of going through Uber.

Used it a lot in Washington DC. But there are a lot of people doing it there, sometimes they have both Uber and Lyft stickers on their windows.

Not all are created equal, that's for sure. Uber drivers and cars are like a box of chocolates... never know what you're going to get.

I prefer Lyft over Uber, but Uber has better international coverage. Typical wait time is ~10 minutes. While they are both usually a bit cheaper than a taxi, I find the vehicle tracking part of the app very useful for knowing how close are they to arriving, as well as keeping an eye on the route used between origin and destination - esp when in a foreign city and not really knowing the area - you can at least see that they're going in the right direction. They both use a demand-based pricing model, and charge extra fees for certain sources & destinations, like the airport.

Downsides:
1) You have no clue who is picking you up. Uber does very little in terms of background checks. This is basically organized, paid hitchhiking to a certain degree. I've had a couple 'interesting' drivers, and while the ride worked out in the end, I was questioning my decision making skills during the rides.
2) It can be hard to spot your ride, especially if they're picking you up at busy location like airport arrivals, since it's just a normal car. You basically have to play 'spot the license plate'.
3) I also have some personal 'religion' issues in that I won't ride in certain brands of vehicles, ever, and there's no way to specify those preferences in the app. I just cancel the ride if I have an issue, if there's a cancellation fee to do so, so be it.

You can just launch the app at various times throughout the day and see what the wait time is. That should give you a good idea of what to expect at your location.

Interesting, tell me more about this. Is it like a Ford god?

Install both apps. I've used both services quite a bit.
On several trips I haven't even bothered getting a rental car.
I don't even drive to the airport any longer. Lyft drops me off at the door. No messing with catching a shuttle for longterm parking or even driving around trying to find a spot in shortterm. Screw that.
