Truck 1/2 ton -> 1 1/2 ton

I am looking to buy a heavy duty truck for towing. I was looking through trucks, and see different weight classes. I know the 1/2 ton are the F150s, C/K1500s, and Ram 1500's. Then 1 tons are the F350s, C/K3500s, and Ram 3500's.

Are dual rear wheels (dually's) a 1 ton, or 1 1/2 ton? I see stake/flat bed trucks as 1 1/2 and then some as 1 ton. I also see a F-series chassis/engine classified as a 1 ton, and then a 1 1/2 ton.

What does this weight actually mean? How much they can tow (which seems awfully low)? Or much they can carry (in their bed).

I also know that you're not "supposed to", but will a 1 ton truck be able to pull a 15,000lb trailer? If you do get pulled over for pulling a trailer over its weight, whats the penalties associated with it? This is NOT for commercial use.

Thanks again guys,

It depends on what chassis they have...

But I can tell you this much... a F-350 Dually can tow a 15,000lb trailer without BLINKING...

I have no idea, but here is a funny story I overheard that should make you smile while you wait for a real answer.

Two coworkers were discussing who's car would win in a race. One has a v6 Mustang, the other a light truck (a 1/2 ton...forgot what exactly).

M = Mustang owner
T = Truck owner

M: I bet even you could beat me in a race...my car is slow
T: Eh, I doubt it...how much power does it have?
M: I think around 250
T: I think I have you beat on that, but how much does it weigh?
M: Not sure...I think it's about 3000 pounds
T: No, it can't be that heavy...my truck's a 1/2 ton - that means it weighs 1000 pounds. No way your car is three times heavier than my truck
M: I'm not sure

:roll: I was still new there and didn't want to piss anyone off, but damn...I had to leave and laughed my ass off.
