My wife is going on a teachers retreat for a weekend and may not have her enchanced driver's license by then. Can you still get to and back with just your birth certificate and normal Michigan drivers license?

Have to have a passport now from what I've been told. Last few times I went to Canada I used my passport.

You don't need a passport or enhanced ID to get into Canada. It's getting back that is the PIA. You need to have one of the two or you could end up screwed.

I heard that if you have proof that you applied for the enhanced license or passport they still might let you though. i have noticed that they are pretty easy going still

Seriously, what are they going to do? Make you live in Canada the rest of your life. Tell her to take her birth cetificate and act stupid.

First of all. They cannot deny you entry into your own country the most they can do is fine you. They will give you a hard time an tell you to get a sort of id. If you applied for an enhanced they clip your id and goe you a temp paper. You can use this and your birth cert.

Ok I work at the bridge, there is no fine or anything. More than likely you will just get a lecture about how your supposed to have a passport/nexus/etc. BUT if you catch someone on a bad day and you don't have proper ID they could hold you for up to 4 hours to confirm who you are and your citizenship.

There is a good number of people that still cross without proper ID.

I went once with my birth certificate and license. No problems. The guy didn't even say anything, just handed me a packet with info on the enhanced ID and passport. Granted I was only in the country for a half hour tops.

And the drug sniffing dogs never found the stuff?

haaa.. NO... lol. My younger brother actually borrowed my car to go over there, and locked the keys in it...He got a hotel for the night with friends, and I told him id come over in the morning to drop the spare keys off to him. He proceded to use a slim jim that night, and knocked the little sensor for the alarm off in the door, so the car was disabled. Soooo.. long story short, pulled the door panel, put the sensor back on, and left right after that. It was freezing that day too.

I like how it's harder for a US citizen to come back into Michigan after visiting Canada, than it is for an illegal immigrant to sneak over here, sign up for welfare, get a drivers license, have 5 babies, and commit murder!

Ain't that the truth...

Going statesway , we always bring the passports now, just to avoid a long/longer wait, especially after sitting in a line for a while (usually).

The canadian customs aren't really much to worry about, my buddy works there and told me that they take pictures of the license plates on cars more for statistics than security...lol
