Transfering a vehicle with a lost title?

I have a quick question regarding Michigan laws on lost titles and abandoned vehicles. Our old roommate owes us about $1000 for rent and random utilities. It ws a jointly and severably liable lease, so we can't take him to court. Anyway, when he moved out, he left his car. An 02 Stratus (ex police cruiser) with no battery that he hasn't driven in 9 months maybe. We told him, we will take that and not come after him for the $1000. He agreed. But then he never got us a Title or a key. I'm almost positive the Title is lost since there was a blank application for a lost title in the car with beer spilled on it. The car has been sitting on our lawn for 2 months now since he moved out. If I go to the SOS with him, can we have the car transfered to my name there? Or does he need to apply for a lost title and then transfer it after that? I want the car off my lawn soonish, haha.

I did it on a 65 chevelle but its sort of a hassle. I bought it years ago from a guy never changed the title and lost it. Go to the sect state tell them you bought it lost title and dont know how to contact the owner they will run a few different checks for liens and if its listed as stolen. After that they may just issue a title or they may require you have the police come out and fill out a green sheet for it.

This is in the UP, but same laws should apply. Seems like it's pretty easy to get a new title though. Thanks for the quick answer!
I wasn't sure if there was something I could do because the car has been sitting on my lawn for 2 months. I would like a key for it, might be able to get more than scrap value if it will run.

Those places are both over 100 miles away, haha. I'm in Houghton. I do go down to Marquette sometimes though, so maybe I'll see if I can get one while there.

This car is in bad shape. Paint is faded badly, and it's just terribly dirty. I'll see if I can get the key from the guy (if he hasn't dissappeared). We've all been gone during the summer so we haven't been able to get anything done with the car.

You might be able to get a key cut at the dealership
from the cars VIN, once you can show ownership.

If he takes his id and registration to sos in canton or livonia for 20 they will give him a instant title, then he or she can sign the vehicle off to you
