trans shifting problem

2002 explorer with automatic 4x4 o/d light is flashing and it wont shift into 3rd unlees you let off the gas pedal a lil bit,any help would be appreciated guys

First I would say check trans fluid levels....YOu have a pressure loss somewher. Typically when your OD light flashes though Your dealing with either an electronic control issue, or an internal mechanical failure.....May needa rebuild. I would have it scanned first.

Ya its a sealed unit so I can't check the fluid,I'm gonna try to get it scanned tommorow and go from there I guess

Same basic trans (5r55w)for the 4.0 or the 4.6. Just different case.
The scan wil show a gear ratio error for 3rd or shift solenoid performance, one in the same. Several very common problems with that unit. High mileage units have excessive wear in the servo bores. One small chance it may be repairable in the vehicle.

V6 4.0 with 130 thousand miles,truck does shutter once in a while as well
