my dtrs merc mariner won't start at times and when i shift it thru the gears(auto trans) then it'll somtimes start.my guess is the tr sensor on the trans.the research tells me i need a special tool to align the switch but the ford tool costs anywhere from 80-120 dollars.is the tool really needed or are there some kind of alignment marks or notches to line up.looking at the part online doesn't look like an alignment tool is needed but i really don't know.if anybody has done this before please enlighten me so i don't have to take it to the dealer.

What year? Two different transmissions, two different procedure's.

MARINER 05-08 4 SP F/AWD L4 2.3L V6 3.0L CD4E
MARINER 09-10 6 SP FWD L4 1.6L 2.0L 2.5L V6 3.0L 6F35

Some what simple.
place the shifter in "N".
Loosen up the mounting screws and turn right or left to line up the marks.
The attached photo should look similar.

Sorry, I even photo shopped it but could not get it to attach. Sorry. I found a picture of it on google.
Like I said, place the transmission in "N" and line up the marks, then tighten the 2 mounting bolts.

I'm really sorry if I'm high jacking, but I have the same issues the OP stated. Car is a 2004 Monte Carlo though. Any ideas or help Rich??

Ouch.... the sensor is common to go bad on later 4t65e's.
Its internal, so you have to remove the side cover.
The early ones you could sneak a new switch in by just removing the cover(which is not fun to remove) .... late ones are not as easy... i forget... I think the v-body has to be removed.

Oh holy hell lol.......... someone told me it could need the shifter cable replaced, since the one on this vehicle is supposedly not adjustable. Any truth??
