Toyota 4Runner opinions wanted

Long story short my wife and I rented a 2021 last week and liked it, a lot.

Any opinions or experiences before starting to search for one?

Thanks

I had one for a rental and it got terrible fuel economy. Felt very un-refined to me for the money. If you like how it looks and are ok with old tech they are fine.

Better than an XJ!

Ha! So yes, for those that don't know we have 3 XJs. 2 are 200k miles and one with 63k so basically new. The 4runner is light-years more refined and sophisticated than the xj. I don't want something with lots of tech.

Gas mileage wasn't good by today's standards but was better than the XJs.

They are too expensive for me still so I'm not going out and placing an order but I wasn't sure if they are unreliable pieces if crap or not.

I have been looking at them for a few years now. The thing that is holding me back is the fuel economy and lack of power. Yes they are great vehicles for offroading, and all that sort of thing, as well as reliable and probably last forever if you maintain it. I've had my 2008 Fusion since new, and it's still a great car, but rusting out. Other than that, it is perfect in every way for what I need. I can't let go of my 20-30mpg for 12-14mpg for that kind of money. I signed up on a group/forum on FB and have got a lot of both good and bad info regarding them. Just doing research...May be worth a shot, but if you have others that are similar, you most likely know what you're in for.
If you go for it, Off Road Premium is best case, at least in my opinion.

Biggest issues I could find, but overall the 4.0L is a pretty decent engine.
Cracked cylinder heads
Water pump (water pump impeller starts slipping on the drive-shaft due to loose press-fit)
Automatic Gearbox hunting with cruise control activated

I can't believe how much money these things are though and people are paying OVER MRSP. Guess its still the supply and demand thing.

Great advice and opinions, exactly what I was looking for. Thanks all!

I'll keep my eyes out but not bite until one comes along at a price point I'd be willing to spend (years from now, probably haha)

Haha, it's not. But why? Lack of power?

The computer won’t let you. You get a warning on the dash that both the gas and brake are being pushed and it kills the gas. I normally always video tape me doing a burnout in my rental cars, but this one was a huge fail. Until I unplugged the brake sensor, then she let um fly.

That's hilarious!
