Town Car vs. XJ6

just a completely pointless comparo.

I think it is funny because my dad had an '89 TC and my mom had a '92 XJ6 VandenPlas. The jag was a nicer car in everyway, but that thing always broke down.

Jeremy Clarkston drives a FGT.

What car did he buy that he ended up having to return because it had so many problems over and over? Wasn't it the FGT? There was a big story on whatever car it was and it was pretty funny in fact all the bullshit he went through with it.

After Two years of waiting, famous British journalist Jeremy Clarkson, finally got his hands on his brand new Ford GT last week. Finally...It was about Time!

But what kind of reliability you can expect from a supercar, made by a car manufacturer which the name stands for: "Fix Or Repair Daily", "Found On Road Dead", "Found On Rubbish Dump" ???

Well, one day he got the car, he decided to go to the Top Gear studios, to show his new Pride and Joy. But when he was about to leave the studio...D'OH!

The shiny posh supercar, wouldn't start via the engine-start button. Clarkson went home in a Toyota Corolla Verso.

This apparently, was later attributed to the vehicle immobilization system malfunctioning and not allowing the engine to start. So Clarkson had to take it back to Ford.

- 2 days later when he got it back from the dealer, the Alarm went off Mad, blowing off when it felt like at 3am, then at 4am, then next the night at 11pm, Waking everyone up in the house, even his dogs. Then he took it back to Dealer again.

After getting the car back from the Ford dealer, Jeremy received a call from the Tracking Company to let him know, that his car had been stolen, while Clarkson was driving the car home from the dealer. They asked him, for his security password, but he didn't know, and it wasn't necessary since he was driving the car. Clarkson took it back to the Ford yet again.

Finally, he got it back in on June 18. But on the way to the studio the next day, he got another ring that his car had been stolen yet again. Apparently the car was stolen 5 times while he drove it to the studio: 7:22 Am, 7:46 Am, 8:23 Am, 8:47 Am and 9:10 Am.

The Alarm went off five times while he was driving, can you imagine the embarrassment to drive a wide blue car with white stripes and the alarm blowing off along the road???

But, Jeremy got a courtesy car. And don't think it is something special.

Although Ford own some nice brands, such as Aston Martin, Jaguar, Mazda and Land Rover - Clarkson thought: "mmmm...maybe they will give me an Aston DB9, Jaguar XKR perhaps...or maybe a Mazda RX-8 or Range-Rover"...

But NO!

Ford provided Mr. Clarkson a Ford Focus Estate Diesel as a Courtesy car.

One of the largest car manufacturers in the world, and this is how they treat even their prestigious customers?!

There's an article he wrote somewhere but the one above summarizes the story pretty well.

And it means nothing. It was an aftermarket alarm system. Bunch of idiots at Top Gear.

Oh ya, dont buy a Lightning and try to take it offroading - It doesnt have 4x4.

I love when he threw his shopping bag in the back and was like

"cheerio no way to secure it" well no shit

its a fucking truck bed DEET DEE DEE

lol thought he said he kept taking it to Ford for them to fix it? Why would they fix an after market alarm?

Because he's a retard. That's not an OEM piece, and it had to be fitted to the car for insurance. So wait, he's got an aftermarket alarm required because of British insurance, and it's Ford's fault?

Then the jackass left the car in the garage for months without running it, and flips out when the battery is dead. Go figure. Real gearhead this one.

Apparently Ford tried to fix it or they just made it all up which I kinda doubt.

I dunno I like the guy and the show is pretty damn funny you must admit! Not like Ford having problems is something that is very hard to believe anyways. I thought it made for a funny video if nothing else. Did he end up buying it back? Do those things really get that terrible of mileage or only when driven like they are supposed to be?

I guess we know why Ford only sent 28 over there...

top gear is an entertaining show, and they are very good drivers, but they dont know much when it comes to the actual cars themselves. its all given to them on a car, and if its not british, its rubbish

You guys all realize that he praises the FGT. Even though he had serious problems with it, he never ripped on the car...

Kind of like me with the wagon. At 106k it spins a rod bearing and I am moderatly pissed, but not ranting. However I still think my dad's '07 Tahoe LTZ is a pile of shit.

No, they did fix it. But again, it's like complaining to BMW your alarm you had installed because of Kentucky regulations went bad. He says "the car" is unreliable, when it's "the aftermarket alarm". They went over that thing with a fine tooth comb precisely because they knew he makes his living by whining.

He did keep the car, and eventually sold it to a guy over there on my site. They don't get terrible mileage. Everything is exaggerated ridiculously on that show. I drove the same road route in the mountains on back to back days last year, and we made it all the way through the route and down the mountain just ending on E in a GT, the next day we stopped for gas halfway through in a Gallardo just in case, and we still ended on E at the bottom (with a bigger fuel tank). It got something in the low 20s on a run from Miami to Detroit I did last year.

There's a huge grey market for US GT's in Europe. I know more than one person that paid $250-300k over there.

Clarkson just annoys me because of his fervent anti-Americanism. It gets sugarcoated on TV like "oh it's just shtick", but well before he had any notoriety over here, he used to write the most ridiculous shit in the papers over there. When I lived there in the mid 90s, everything that was American was horrible, stupid, and worthless. And that goes beyond cars. He's written pandering op-eds about how America is the worst place on earth and it's a house of cards full of ignorant people the world hates. Gets old when you live there.
