seems like when i download torrents (i ust Utorrent) it goes slow as shit, like 5k or less. is there something in the settings that i need to change??? or maybe a better client to use to download torrents?

I used to use it all the time and it seems it's shit now. Takes forever to start and when it does, it takes forever to download. I just stopped using it

Well, there are a number of factors involved..

Your download speed with vary depending on how many seeders there are and how fast their upload stream is.

Also your upload cap can become a factor.

Have you opened up all necessary ports on your firewall to allow for seemless uploading? Do you have a nice share ratio?

yeah i opened up all the ports i needed to on the firewall.. but it seems no matter what settings i change in the client, my upload speed is always way higher than my download speed and its slowing the shit out of my internet.. apparantly Charters up speed is like 256k and downstream is 3mbps

Use Azureus, its a much better client. as for speeds it all depends on two things... the number of seeds you get AND how bad your firewalls are on your computer and your router.

If it's a public torrent site, that's probably the reason. Private ones are super fast. I always see 1.0mb/s download, even with only 3-5 seeds.

But I also have a faster donwload speed than you. However, 5k/s is too low for 3mbps. Do you cap your upload speed? That sometimes helps.

i use public ones all the time and usualy see between 20-200k sometimes they just take a while to get going...

I agree. I've used Azureus for years (get the SafePeer plugin).. Also make sure you're upload cap is maxing out your cable modem. That can heavily reduce your download speeds.

How old is your cable modem? Mine was five or six years old and couldn't keep up with the number of connections created by the torrents.. I ended up having to replace the modem entirely (cheap fix).

btw i use Burst!

i will give Azureus a try.. i'll post back results.. Im not sure how old my cable modem is, but it cant be THAT old, since i've only lived here maybe a year and a half, but i do believe it was previously used. I'll see if changing clients helps.. and yes they are public torrents

ok with the new client i throttled my upload speed to a max of 10 kb/s.. The download speed seems to be hanging near 20, but i saw it jump up to as much as 80.

for this particular file: Seeds - 15(1249), Peers - 34(4063)..

i dunno.. seems you can find more stuff via torrents.. but if its on usenet, you can get it more quickly (my download speed on there is around 400kb/s.. i'd still rather pay the $10/month for the news groups.. ah well

Usenet and Torrents complement eachother. It's not an either or type thing. For large iso and avi downloads I've found Torrents to be much simplier. I run it 24x7 and queue up a dozen files at a time, so if any one or two files take a while I don't care.

and of course the file im trying to get hasnt showed up on usenet yet lol.. damnit! only 3 1/2 more hrs till the torrent is done :)
