tips for pulling off an oil pan that has a hard seal

I got all the bolts off my oil pan, now I just need to pull it off, but there is a really tough seal on there.

When I get home tonight I'll try using a heat gun to loosen it up.

There is really no room for me to try to pry it off.
 
Slap it around with a rubber mallet. Try not to hit the flats of the pan just the corners. after a few minutes they usually kick loose.
 
were you at murrays last night? i thought i saw ya walkin in when i was driving away. ive got a pry bar thats good at breaking old pans away. i couldnt get my 460 intake off with 2 breaker bars jammed down it, but a couple hits with a sledge and a little pry bar and it lifted right off

yeah the one on woodward. I needed a 1/4" drive universal joint.
 
Is it a gasket or is the whole thing permatex? If its perm. Then i would just tap a small screw driver in there to make a small hole and then use a box cutter or razor blade, stick it in there and just start cutting across the seal. I had to do that. Didnt want to go the hammer method. I would imagine this could work with a gasket though.

It's a seal not a gasket so you are correct. what you mentioned is indeed the alternative method. they recommend using a paint scraper instead of a screw driver so you don't bend the pan enough where the new gasket or sealer won't seal completely.
 
You most likely won;t have to beat the living shit out of it. Just some good hard slaps should be enough if you have a heavy rubber mallet. Hit it on one side then move to the other. I remove pans like this all the time and as long as you don;t go all roid ragged on it you won't hurt the pan.

Yup. Sure, a paint scraper would probably work also. I would think an object much smaller and pointier would be easier to get threw the gasket in one small spot rather then a 2-3 inch wide paint scraper imop. I just always used a small flat head without any issues ever. Just need to make enough of a spot for a razor to get the point in.
