Timing

How do i set the distributor timing on a small block ford 289? I tried the #1 cyl to TDC trick and it didnt work. Are there any other ways i can do this?

were you 180* off? both the intake and exhaust valves must be closed with piston at TDC... You could have been on an exhaust stroke. Us hillbillys just put a finger over the spark plug hole and let someone else crank until it blows your finger away and then you have #1 at TDC

feel that compression release with your finger is how i have always done it.....never had a problem

Also be sure you have the rotor at the #1 placement on the distributer

Could i look at the valve springs and if they are both closed then that would be comp. stroke?

If you would like I can come out one day this week and give you a hand getting it right. I am not to far from you I live in Warren, I am laid off right now so I have nothing but time. Just shoot me a PM if you feel want a helping hand.

No i didnt, I just set it to where it was drivable and no engine sounds. Yes i did it with the vacuum line off. I work on my own car because i own it.

well if its drivable i suggest you drive it to someone closeby who has a timing light and get it checked out. You should set it to about 14 degrees at idle with the vacuum line off, it should go to about 32 degrees by 3000 rpms with the vacuum line back on and revvin the car up.

carbs get advance from the vacuum actuator as well as from springs inside the distributor. your total advance is the total amount you get from each combined. which is usually about 30-36 depending on the car
