This is why you shoot the intruder and THEN call the police

The homeowner should have just shot the guy.

BTW...In Michigan...can you shoot someone who comes into your home? Oh wait...you have to prove your "life was in danger", right?

You can shoot someone who comes in your YARD if they are threatening your life.

That's what I figured. I'm gonna take the class soon, so I'm gonna ask 5,000 questions along with the other 5,000 I assume people ask.

Someone asked if you could shoot someone that was trying to pry your window open, if you were sitting on the couch watching TV, or if you had to wait for them to actually enter your house. The answer was you could shoot them if they were trying to open the window.

And then to demonstrate, they had two people from the class stand next to each other. The instructor blew a whistle, and one of the people took off running in one direction. At the same time, the other person drew their gun and fired 3 shots into a paper targe that was 15 feet away.

The guy that ran made it like 25 feet by the time the third shot was fired. The point was that if you wait until they get in through the window, it's too late.

You can shoot someone ANYWHERE (minus no gun zones) if they are threatening your life and you are do not have any other way out.

ex: If you could just get the guy to leave by giving him your wallet then it may look bad if you shoot the guy. Another example that would look bad is if you were in a car and a guy on foot came at you with a knife and all you had to do was drive off but you decide to shoot him.

There is one major change for life endangering encounters on your own property. The castle doctrine became law in Michigan so whenever your life feels threatened on your property you no longer have the obligation to try and retreat. You can simply hold your ground and if an aggressor still wants to try their luck you shoot to stop the threat.

I carry my gun everywhere, always with within reach whether I'm driving, shopping, or watching TV because chances are when you need it, you can't just ask them to hold tight while I run and get my gun.

That is great advice. You obviously paid attention in class.

My friend just got his permit and his gun and is taking the class in Nov. He wants me to take it with him. My Dad is all set, and told me to go, so it looks like I'm going. I do NOT ever want to shoot anybody, but obviously nor you or I or anybody on here is gonna let someone harm them or their family.

The only hard part is that if you are out with it, legally, and someone calls you to come meet at a bar/resturant, you gotta go home and put it away. I wouldn't trust locking it in a PLASTIC glove box or even my trunk.

You think someone is going to steal your gun if you have it locked in a box and tucked in your spare tire area or something?

Yes. This day and age, if they want something bad enough...they'll get it. It ain't shit to pop a trunk lock out and steal everything in that trunk in 10 seconds or less.

I leave mine in the glove box usually, I'm not going to leave it at home if I'm going into a bar. If your gun gets stolen and it was out of sight your car was getting broken into anyways, just another thing to put on the insurance, that's why you pay monthly for that stuff.

x2, and if you do any drinking, make sure the gun is disarmed and the clip is seperate from it...

Yeah, I've heard that too.

That's the whole thing though, so many people have them now. Even though hopefully a lot of these people are legal, who knows when someone starts drinking and gets mad will pull it on someone. Why can't people resolve things with their fists anymore like the good 'ole days?

The kind of person who's going to get drunk and shoot you at the bar isn't the kind of person to have a handgun permit, much less leave it locked up in the car!

Exactly...I would hope so. Remember that situation at the Post Bar in Clinton Twp? Guy and girl arguing/fighting outside, 23 year old broke it up, guy goes gets gun from SUV, pumps a couple shots in the 23 year old, 23 year old dies. Sometimes being a good samaritan just isn't worth it.

well................ this seems fucked up...........but maybe if there's any law enforcement folks on here that would care to weigh in on this.......

anyhow, shouldn't we reasonably consider that there could possibly be another side to this story, or at least some details that perhaps the article left out.

frankly, to me, our law enforcement officers that deal with the seriously fucked up public, on a daily basis, deserve at the very least, our respect, and gratitude, for the thankless duties they perform. perhaps under duress, in a rapidly deteriorating nighttime situation, things did go awry. that's no reason for an indictment of law enforcement in general.

although my position may be unpopular, it is in now way unreasonable.
