I'm not sure how many are aware, but the FCC approved a rule a few months back that will let consumers swap set-top cable boxes for other (and often more capable) devices. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2016/...bout-innovation-and-competition-not-copyright

Fresh off the heels, now you can roll your own DVR system with something like a HD Homerun Prime. Silicon Dust, the manufacturer of the HD Homerun network TV tuners, is working on software that works on NAS devices to give it DVR functionality, and it will work with devices such as nVidia Shield TV, Nexus Player, Apple TV, or software for Windows, OSX, Linux, iOS, and Android as well as Kodi and Plex. http://www.silicondust.com/products/hdhomerun/hd-homerun-dvr/

I've run my own DVR setup in the past, but had to implement a bunch of workarounds to get maximum functionality out of it. It worked pretty good, but was a hassle to set up. I have a HD Homerun Prime and find it a great device, well worth the money. With the coming DVR functionality, you can have a few Primes running and record a plethora of shows in one swoop, and give everybody in the house some DVR goodness. I'll be jumping on board for sure once this is launched.
