Thinking about the next one.

AutoEuphoria

Captain Slow
Driving around this Focus sure does get boring sometimes...especially when I need to accelerate. Push the pedal down...wait 15 seconds...see I'm still only doing 55 and then cry :(

Bad thing is that no matter what, I won't be able to do anything for a while. This in-between time always sucks because I just keep looking around, seeing things I'd love to have and think "oh man, if I only had the money...".

I've been tossing a few things around in my head. I've set some parameters for myself to help narrow stuff down. First, it has to be pretty quick when I get it. I have gotten tired over the years of getting slow cars and trying to make them quick. I've spent far too much money in that pursuit. I am looking for something that will run at least a high 12 when I get it. Second, it has to be OK for longer cruises, too. I'm not looking for a race car...I'm looking for something I can enjoy on the weekends. I do plan on having another car to drive daily, too, so cargo space and fuel economy aren't really major factors. I definitely want a coupe of some sort...a convertible just isn't my style. Also, needs to have a manual transmission...no ATX for me.

So, based on that criteria and my own personal likes and dislikes, I weeded out a few cars and came down to a short list. One of them really keeps sticking out for me as something I'd really like to own, but I'm not sure I'm thinking clearly on the subject, so I figured I'd ask around here.

The cars I thought would fit well were an 03/04 Cobra, a 2002+ Corvette (preferrably a Z06), or a Mazda Rx7 with an LS1 swap.

The Mazda is the car that really sticks out for me. I owned a 94 Rx7 back a few years, and loved it (minus the completely shit motor). I always wanted to swap an LS1 into it, but being a college student at the time I didn't have any funds to do such a project, and the specimen I had wasn't really worthy of such a feat.

I just love the way the interior wraps around you. I've sat in a lot of cars, but the interior of the Rx7 just sticks in my mind as one of the best. The seating position, the way everything is molded around the driver...it's a great car to be inside. The exterior is very sexy, too, imo. Very sleek and slippery. The car is light (like under 2500lbs, I believe). An LS1 would give it 350whp, which makes for a better P/W ratio than a stock Cobra. The LS1 has a huge aftermarket, too, and although some parts would need to be custom made (exhausts for example), the internals (heads/cam, etc) would all still be fine. The swap still maintains the car's near 50/50 weight distribution, so handling is all but uneffected. The price is the kicker for me. You can find a swapped Rx7 in good condition for under $20,000. That's pretty cheap compared to the $25,000+ for a good condition Cobra and $30,000+ for an old Z06.

I'm just not sure that I'm thinking about it right. The main points are that the car has to be fun to drive in all aspects (handling and speed), has to have a good interior (a bad inside ruins the experience for me), a good driving position (like a sports car), around $20,000 or a bit over, and be quick to start with (something around a 12.9 or under would be nice).

Thoughts? Other ideas?

Pic for fun (this one was for sale at $19,500 and the engine isn't stock):

Have you considered a Mazdaspeed3? Quick, zippy, turbocharged, good handling (a little torque steer - meh). Here's some of the the write-up from C&D:

On sale as you read this, the Mazdaspeed 3 starts at $22,800. That’s about $2300 cheaper than a base 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX wagon, which lists for $25,120 (2007 prices were unavailable at press time). Even fully loaded with the $1715 GT package (leather seat trim, xenon headlamps, LED taillamps, six-CD changer, rain-sensing wipers, trip computer, and aluminum pedals), the $1750 nav system, and a short list of inexpensive extras such as floor mats, the car tops out at $27,185.

Working the shifter feverishly — the low ratios in first and second mean two shifts happen before 60 mph — we finally scorched a 5.8-second 0-to-60 time and a 14.4-second quarter-mile at 99 mph. The 156-hp Mazda 3 s wagon hits 60 in 7.4 seconds.

Departing the track, we drove the Mazdaspeed 3 over 600 miles through California hill country and down lumpy expressways. Mazda’s commitment to preserving ride quality shows. Even with 45-series tires on 18-inch wheels, hopping is muted over L.A.’s notoriously stubbled freeways. Big thwacks get eaten by the stiff skeleton and excreted as much smaller vibrations.

The Verdict: Mazda’s minute wagon gets drunk on boost without losing its balance.

If you go for a swapped fd, make sure that the chassis dosn't have a torque arm added.

I have always been a fan of LS FD's.

I had an 06 GTO. It's still a bit more expensive than what I wanted to pay, is pretty damn heavy (meaning slower than I'd like), and it just suffers terribly from heat soak. I really loved driving it, but I always wished it was faster.

As for the MS3...that's a good suggestion, but I forgot to mention I'm tired of FWD cars as the "fun car". I've had enough of them in my life...I want a fast RWD car. I've dealt with a 250whp Integra, 400whp Integra, and a 400whp Civic. I've also had 2 Evos. I'm really looking for a fast RWD car.

Could you explain this one to me? I'm not sure I understand 100%. I think I know what you're talking about, but I need clarification.

As far as "pulling ass" I'm not interested in what the car will get me. I just want to have something I can have fun in. I'm perfectly capable of cleaning my own wheels

At that point, not a coupe, a used STi or EVO would be MUCH better options. Both cars are over 300awhp by stage II with a good tune.

You can pick up a nice 03/04 starting around 19,000 with miles but most used Terminators I have seen are absolutely immaculate cars! If that isnt enough for you then pulley, tune, exhaust it :D

As I said...I've gone down the Evo path...twice. Just not something I want to do again. It's fun to drive and can be made to be pretty quick (with a lot of $$), but it's heavier than I want, and has a bunch of stuff I'm not looking for (back seat...4 doors...big trunk). Plus the interior is horrible (what I meant when I said that the interior can kill the experience.

And the ONLY reason I'm considering this over the Cobra is because (to me) the interior on the Cobra is awful and looks cheap. I'm not sure on the handling, either. It doesn't have to be a go cart, but I would like to do both AutoX and Drag racing with the car.

Ok lets keep this on topic sorry for the hot blonde whore i posted

AutoEuphoria when do you plan on making this purchase???

I'm not sure...it all depends on how things go financially in the next year. I was hoping to be in the market next spring (as in spring of 2009). The plan would be to save up a good amount and get a loan for the rest...get rid of the SVT Focus and get a cheaper, older daily driver. I've taken a lot of steps to get my bills down, and I was thinking of using this as a reward for paying off my credit card. I figure it'll take me a year to pay that off...but once I do, that'll free up some more money that I can use on having a car that I really want.

I was planning basically the same to happen this spring buttttt not gonna happen due to paying overage on miles for my truck and my increase lease payment, which is good cause the prices on 03/04's will drop even more by the time I'm ready to purchase :D

LS2 GTO. I don't think you gave the car enough credit. Heat soak is fixable with a tweak in the tune and an IAT relocation. It's not that much heavier than a Terminator but it handles better and is 100x more comfortable to drive daily. With DRs and a tune, 12s are possible. Besides, everybody in Motown has a Mustang. Do something different.

Here's a badass roadrace Evo II for you. He says it should put down 450 to the wheels.

If you are waiting untill spring of '09... Elise's and Exige S's prices should be pretty low. The exige S's power/weight ratio is great and it is going to be the best handling car out there for the price.

you have stated that you have driven all those nice cars, a gto, 2 evos!@#!! and the such. i don't think your going to be happy with anything you pick up, speed wise until its modified so i would go with what ever tickles your ass when your driving it the longer that feeling remains, the more your going to want to put into the car.
