These little things are almost impossible to shoot! I need better gear to have a chance.

Out of 300 shots, these were the best, and only 2 are good.

I had one when i was a kid and wayyyyyyy to expensive for someone of that age to be messing with em.
 
Tripod + manual focus + burst mode? Just wait for it to get near your viewfinder and then fire off a bunch of shots. Pixels are free.

A tripod make work on a race day, where there are 10-15 cars on the track at once. Manual focus, no way in hell. You cant focus, and track a quick moving object when you dont know where its going to go. I had it on continuous too.
 
what if you set the focus before the race? have someone stand out there so you can get a focus on them, and switch the AF off. that would eliminate one of the variables. do you have any off camera lighting?? you could set up a flash somewhere else and let that light up the little cars (rc cars?). that way you'd be able to shoot much faster.

Feel free to come try it, I'm sure the drivers would kill you for using any external lighting.
