If it's the one I think it is, it's a simple mathematic formula. Every 2 digit number put through the formula results in a multiple of 9.

11....1+1=2.....11-2=9
24....2+4=6.....24-6=18

If you go back and look, the symbols for 9, 18, 27, 36, etc. are all the same.
