Pretty soon Ill be winding down on my house work and moving in, this means almost time for a new project
. Ive decided to go with the 18" Goldwood 1858 woofer in an H-frame open baffle, described in great detail here: http://www.quarter-wave.com/Project08/Jordan.pdf According to Martin King, this beast goes down to 22Hz in an H-frame, far lower than most consumer subwoofers, just above the lower threshold of the human ear of 20Hz. The best part about it, there is no box coloration, and its a di-pole speaker, meaning it radiates sound from the front and the back. Di-pole speakers have an amazingly airy and ambient response, and are far less sensitive on room placement. While Im going with the general design in the write-up above, mine will not use the passive crossover or 4" full range driver. Ive opted to go bi-amped with an active crossover, with my 12" Electro Voice coaxials up top driven by a 4W tube amp, and the Goldwoods driven by 200W plate amps. I figure Ill experiment with crossover points between 80Hz and 200Hz for the best effect. Its not too often one finds a speaker that covers nearly the entire range of human hearing. The best part is, these dont break the bank either...
Goldwood 1858s - $93 ea. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=290-386
DBX 223S active crossover - $160 http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=246-101
Yung 200W plate amps - $126 ea. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=301-504
Plywood - maybe $50 or so
Altogether, this should run me ~$650. Not accounted for are my EV drivers, which usually fetch somewhere from $200 to $500/pair on eBay depending on condition, and the tube amp I built would retail for ~$1200 off the shelf. As shown in the article, other speakers can be used for the mids/highs, so you can mix and match as you please.
These arent mine, but the finished product will look similar. I plan on adding front and rear grills for the H-frame, and maybe some sort of grill for up top for the EV to give it a more civil appearance. As shown in this picture, theyre downright stone ugly, but Im sure I can work something out so they dont look like a woodshop project gone wrong.
