The ask Tin about audio thread

Finally spent some time getting acquainted with the new add-on board for the Raspberry Pi last night. 24-bit/192KHz lossless audio sounds pretty damn good! The albums are huge, usually 2GB to 3GB in size. For comparison purposes, a redbook CD at 16-bit/44KHz encoded in the FLAC format is between 300MB and 600MB. The add-on board also has a pair of microphones, I'm hoping somebody writes some real-time analyzer software so I can EQ in the digital domain and have the Pi compensate for anomalies in room response. This setup is pretty nifty since I can control it through my Nexus 4, Nexus 7, or web browser. Internet radio, subscription services, and locally stored files all play nicely. Now I just need to build/buy a case to put it all in.

Phone question for you....

Lg g3 / HTC m8 / Moto X....pick one. I know you loved the X...still do?

Don't really do anything with the phone other than stream music, text, and read shit. Its for the wife and I think she would hate the size of the g3 and m8

Yeah but then I'm dealing with a bigger size phone again...

Shes grandfathered into unlimited data via Verizon but won't let me buy a phone outright.

Hmmm. In that case I'd say the M8 would be a good option.

Tin, should I bother with a soundbar? My living room setup is very clean (floating TV, tucked wires, etc, and I don't really want to wall mount satellites around the room. I can drop a soundbar under the TV and hide the sub behind the couch. I've never heard a soundbar outside of a store so I don't really know of they are worth a shit in a real room. Thoughts?

A soundbar gives you a narrow field of sound. You move your head away from center, then all of a sudden it sounds like a mono signal. Have you thought about in-wall speakers? Lots of nice ones out there.

I did, but I just don't feel like doing all the wall fishing. The real theater will be in the basement. I just want better than TV sound in the living room. The narrow field would suck as we have a couch off to the side of the room. I also didn't really want to run a receiver.

How big is your living room? You can always run a 2.0 or 2.1 setup and get very satisfying sound. I run a pair of B&W DM302's in my living room and there is no shortage of good, clean sound.

Hey Tin,

I installed a 6.5" CDT Component set. Here is the setup I bought:
http://cdtstore.com/cl_series/cl61.htm

The system is as follows:
Kenwood KVT 614
Alpine Type R 12" Sub with Alpine V Power 500w RMS amp
CDT 6.5" Component with 1" tweeters/crossovers powered by a Sony 2 channel 100w RMSx2 amp level at about 80%

No sail panel speakers and no speakers in the hatch - I'm only powering the doors.

The problem is that I get a pop out of my speakers on certain songs at particular volumes. The head unit maxes at 35 and I usually listen to my music loud at 28-30 but never over 30. The passenger side speaker pops more than the drivers side but the drivers side does do it on occasion.

I have the HPF for the doors set to 120hz I believe. I pulled the door panel and the speakers are not blown and for most songs at high volume I do not get the pop. I am using copper clad wire because I couldn't find real copper locally but aside from that I don't know why I'm popping. Do I need to adjust the HPF and if so what frequency do you recommend for my setup? The tweets were installed in the doors about 3" from the mid in the carpeted area on my 97 Z28.

Check to see if the wires are properly secured to the speaker terminals. Another thing, is the amp powerful enough to drive the speakers? If the amp is going into protection mode, you'll get pops as well. Better to have too much power than not enough.

I soldered my connections so they should be good.

This is my amp. You think it could be the problem? I got it ten years ago in a bundle from circuit city.

The amp and speakers should jive together well, they look to be well matched. Are you getting any power fluctuation from the alternator?

Yeah my alternator is only kicking 13.2v. I didn't think that would pose a problem.

I think there's a chance. When I had a freezer in the basement, my stereo would pop when the freezer would kick on. Have you tried those components out of the car to see if you can replicate it? Should be able to plug in your phone or something just to test it out.

No, I never did. I just confirmed yesterday that the alt is bad. I was thinking it was the amp the entire time and was shopping for one of those.
