The ask Tin about audio thread

Any suggestions for a USB DAC+headphone amp before I get an FiiO E10? It was recommended over the E7 and I don't want to spend any more than $100. Just for use at a computer, don't really need it to be portable.

Rega RP-1, Thoughts?

I just missed out on a pioneer pl-560 for $70. Thats kinda what I wanted to spend anyway, But if the rega is a whole nother world I'll spend the loot. I want to buy a nicer turntable for my girls bday as stated in another thread. Any suggestions on what table to keep an eye out for?

Sorry i couldnt get to you sooner, Im working afternoons now. The Project Debut III is indeed a nice table, as are the Music Hall and Regas at the same price point. The Rega has the better rep of the 3, followed by the Project, then the Music Hall.

Yes, go to it!
If you have any interest to check out some quality equipment and learn a thing or 20...Meet some cool people and have a good time.
Go...

Ill be there Sunday, look for a gold Caprice Wagon in the parking lot. Its not like there will be any more of them there . Theres gonna be lots of stuff for sale, too. I got a line on another pair of EVs in cabinets somebody can get very cheap. I dont have the room for them, so Ill pass it along to somebody here. Theyre almost like mine, but made by Allied Radio out of Chicago. The drivers are the same as my EV coaxials, just with Allied stamped on them. Electro Voice sourced out speakers to alot of companies back then. Klipsch, Allied, and Knight, being the main ones.

Any information about a vintage audio show coming up in novi this weekend??

Its at The Sheraton Saturday and Sunday. Its $20, to get in, but thats good for both days, plus they usually give away alot of stuff. Theres not only gonna be vintage audio, but alot of nice modern stuff as well. The show attracts alot of big names in the industry, and they often show off their latest and greatest. This years show is supposed to be smaller than years past, because it was too much to handle for Dave, the admin of Audiokarma. Youre gonna see alot of killer DIY stuff too. I recently bought an amp from a local guy, very poverty looking, but it breathes fire...literally. Hes been working on this circuit for about 6 years now, and hes going to adapt it to the parts I have on hand. In other words, Im gonna be building something killer sometime after the show :).

Hey Tin,

I have a co worker that has a Marantz receiver and says that when the volume is adjusted it makes a lot of static.
Any advice on what he needs to do or look for? I was listening to the guys at work give him advice and told him to wait until I asked you.

Thanks in advance

I just picked up an audio technica at-pl120 for $75.00 did I do ok? lol. It was pretty much impulse, I didnt know and still dont know much about it.

The potentiometers are dirty. It needs this stuff: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=341-246 Should be good as new after. The stuff from Radio Shack can be used, but the solvent in it is known to dry up any lubrication that will be on the potentiometer. Get the full kit for it, itll pay for itself.

EDIT: Heres a good guide on how to apply it properly :). http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2444686&postcount=1

Thanks much, I'll forward this over to him.
I figured he should get a real answer before messing something up.

I've just begun searching for some new speakers. Budget is <$1k. Desire 5.1 system but the front and rear channels must be wall mountable. Use is 60% TV & movies, 40% music.
Getting a sub in that budget isn't necessary. I have a Polk PSW202 to use until it's necessary to replace.

Nearly any bookshelf-type speaker can be wall mounted, but this can complicate things. Speakers react within their environment, and will sound different (good or bad) depending on where they are in the room. The speakers need to be experimented with, placed around the room until you find the sound you like. Once theyre placed, then you can go ahead and mount them up. PSB makes great speakers for the money, their Alpha series highly renowned in the last couple of years...plus they come in under your budget.

2 pairs of PSB Alpha B1s: http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=PBALB1
PSB Alpha CLR1 center channel: http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=PBALCLR1

Youre gonna want 3 pairs of these too to mount them up to the walls. http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=SSSUP

Most of all, be patient. Room placement can be a long process, so take notes on how you placed your speakers and how you liked the sound. It can be a little bit tedious, but youll get the type of sound you prefer by taking it slow.

Heres a bargain for somebody...a pair of Electro Voice Aristocrats for $250. http://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/atq/3001890046.html The cabinets themselves are worth that easily, especially in that condition. The Aristocrat is a Klipsch-designed Michigan-made hifi speaker. Klipsch designed the cabinet and Electro Voice supplied the drivers. Its hard finding them in matched pairs, as mono was the norm when they were released. Most of them you see are mismatched. I recently built a brand new pair of EV X36 crossovers using top shelf components for a project that never materialized. If somebody on here grabs them I'll hook you up with the crossovers cheap. I have a hair over $100 into them.
