T5 Question

What's the difference between GM's T5 trans, and the Ford T5? How durable is the GM T5? Is there anything in particular that I should looking for? Or stay away from?

Well one thing about the GM T5 is that the shifter is offset at an angle on it and uses a different shifter.

T5's are weak trannies, if you plan on making any power or actually driving the car hard at all I'd stay clear of a T5

Is it worth putting any money into it to improve it, or am I better off getting something different? If so, what should I be looking for?

It's a gen3 Firebird, smallblock, around 450HP, and a Ford 9" with a 4:11. I'm in the process of setting it up mostly for Autocross, and occasional Drag Racing. It is Street legal, but is not a daily driver. Right now I'm running a Turbo400 with a 3500stall, which I know is a durable setup, But man, I would love to have a stick in the car! I found what I think is a good deal on a complete T5 stick setup, but don't know enough about the T5 trans to make a good decision.

Thanks for your help guys. So what I'm hearing is to stay away from the T5. Is there a manual trans that I should be looking for that will hold up to the abuse, and that I can make fit into my Firebird?

For what you're doing definatly stay away form the T5! Tremec makes a 5 speed trans that pretty tough and there's always the good ole T56 swap
