Stuck lug nut

I have a penchant for being able to do large jobs without issues, but always run into the stupidest problems doing the simplest tasks.

Anyway right now I've got a lugnut that I can't remove. I tried the ol' bash-a-socket-onto-it trick but, somehow, it didn't grab enough and now it's stuck enough that I can't get it off, but not tight enough that I can remove the damn lug nut.

I gave up for the afternoon, I'll go back out and mess with it when it cools off. Until then, has anybody got any tips I could try? So far I'm just planning on smashing the hell out of it some more w/the mallet in hopes of really getting it stuck on there.

Yes the socket is stuck on the lug nut and so far I can't get it off. I thought of drilling out the lug but kinda tough to do w/the damn socket on there already.

If it's stuck, how come you can't turn the lug nut, that's why I'm confused :gr_jest:

I know, weird situation. Made me wonder WTF a few times.

I said it in the OP though, the socket is stuck to the lug enough to not let me get it back off, but apparently not tightly enough to allow me to spin it and move the lug. It's as if the socket is spinning around the lug nut rather than grabbing into it and turning it. You'd think I'd be able to smack it off the lug at that point, but so far no luck. I gave it some heavy whacks too.

can you get a nut splitter in there?
