Street Racing in N.C.

11 people arrested, 17 cars confiscated

by DÁNICA COTO

Drivers who reached speeds of 165 mph on Interstate 485 were among those targeted by police this weekend in an ongoing crackdown against street racers in Mecklenburg County.

After four months of surveillance, authorities on Sunday arrested 11 people and seized 17 souped-up cars. They began investigating after receiving complaints of more than 100 people gathering Saturday nights at the Stonecrest at Piper Glen shopping center in south Charlotte.

People would meet in the parking lot and then race on the outerbelt or Rea Road, police said.

"It's easy to say that speed kills, but these folks haven't realized that," said Maj. Dale Greene, who oversees Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's special operations unit.

The sting was called "Enjoy the Show" because big crowds gathered to watch the street racers, Greene said. It's a growing problem, with several Web sites promoting the next race, he added. Spontaneous racing also has become popular, with cars slowing to 35 mph on a highway and then racing to the next exit when someone blows a car horn three times, he said.

Most racers are men in their late teens to early 30s, police said. Those arrested early Sunday live in Charlotte, Kannapolis and Monroe and are between the ages of 18 and 22, along with one 31-year-old man who police said likely organized races.

They all face several misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and prearranged speed competition. Their cars, some valued at up to $40,000, likely will be sold at a public auction, police said.

On Sunday, officers seized several Ford Mustangs, Honda Civics, Acuras and Mitsubishis. Many had new engines and transmissions, and their owners had stripped the seats, radios and air conditioners so the cars could go faster, an undercover CMPD officer who didn't want to be identified told the Observer. One Mustang had a racing engine in it, police said.

DMV officials claimed at least six of the 17 cars because they think some of the cars contained stolen parts.

Michael King, 20, who faces one charge of prearranged speed competition and two charges of reckless driving, said he's never raced. But he added that he bought his 1994 Mustang two years ago and souped it up to make the engine sound bigger.

King said he started hanging out at Stonecrest about two years ago because of the big parking lot and the number of people showing off their cars.

"I might play around and spin a tire," he said.

About four years ago, racers in Mecklenburg County would congregate at a Home Depot along Providence Road near Ballantyne until officers ran them off. Now they've chosen Stonecrest, probably because it's close to several interstates and has a large parking lot, police said. Crosland, the company that manages Stonecrest, allowed people to gather in the parking lot so police could investigate, authorities said.

In the past two months, authorities also have arrested eight people and seized eight cars as part of the sting.

More than 70 officers with CMPD, the N.C. Highway Patrol and the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles were part of the sting. At least 60 warrants are still pending, and more car seizures are expected, Greene said.

That is a big DOH for those car owners. Another reason I am leery to race people. I will get on it for a gear or two but definitely not that far over the speed limit!

Another reason I don't do much street racing. Holy fuck, imagine having your car seized and legally sold. Ugh. :pow:

what really pisses me off is why do people feel they have to be involved in everything......."they recieved complaints" about people parking in a parking lot after store hours bullshitting and having a good time, they dont race in the parking lot, but the complaints were about the people being there. it was probably some old person or a snooty ass bitch who was thinking to themselves "hmmmmm those people should be at home reading the bible or something, not out having fun enjoying their hobby. i think im gonna call in a complaint even though they have nothing to do with me and i have nothing to do with them and if i just kept driving i would forget about it in 2 minutes" people piss me off so bad.

ever since ive had my license, and even before while riding around in someone elses car or something around here, we have always been drivin out of our spots to park and chill, or cruise, or whatever. even before i "got involved in street racing" i guess you could say, since ive only been in one street race, but i still go to watch, and have a good time with my friends.

and people judge too quickly when they see a group of cars and people standing around. fuck them

one place around here is a public park, and the cops roll through after they see us there for awhile, and get on the loudspeaker from inside the car and say "parking lot is closed......go home" and you cant even say a word to them. cause they dont have the nerve to get out of the car and say something. and i have tried to walk up to the window and reason with them and they instantly go into the power trip and become hard asses.

this is the ONLY part of the hobby i hate. and im not saying that they shouldnt be arrested for street racing, everyone who does it knows its against the law and there is consiquences, they got caught, and they should be responsible, but i also think selling the car is a lil harsh.

thats all i got for now.

shouldnt they be busier doing a sting on drunk driving? i mean shit over half the people that leave the bar driving are drunk, they were racing on a OUTERBELT bypass wtf, they are out inthe middle of nowhere avoiding trafficked areas this shit pisses me off.

drunk drivings? The share the city/county receives from Drunk Driving is only a fraction of selling a mustang with a racing engine at auction brings in.

When's the auction? I need a mustang with a racing engine. LOL.

That blows...the police need to be doing more constructive things with their time...

i know, right? who the fuck are they to be doing their jobs???

for those of you bitching about cops breaking up organized street racing.... you need to realize that we are in the VAST minority here. most people don't want that shit going on around their houses, on their freeways, etc. the police dept. is a public institution, and they will do what the majority of the people demand!

i think as long as we keep it to a minimum amount of people, and keeping it unorganized, we'll be fine.

Most people don't want anything going on anywhere near them. What about all the times that they were sitting there doing NOTHING? No, we can't have people just doing nothing. Let's just disband them.

I don't mean it as an attack toward you Mx, I'm just venting the frustration of the concept of NIMBY. If people want to congregate somewhere, who am I to complain? Especiallly if they aren't doing anything.

hey, i'm one of those people who sit around on woodward all summer, so i hear ya. point is, though... is that if organized drag racing is coming out of those groups just hanging out... well then... the cops are going to break it up.

But you can't really tell if there is going to be racing in a group. I mean, we can and do all hang out in a group. That doesn't constitute that we are going to head over to wherever and line'em up.

I call 'automotive profiling'. I bet if we were all driving Escorts and Cavaliers they'd drive right by.

This is the type of shit that pisses me off. They have just created more problems then what they had. They have turned a simple ticket into losing your car, so there are going to be a LOT more racers running from the police. I know if I had 40k wrapped up in a car, I sure as shit wouldn't just give it up. Siezing our cars is major BS.

Exactly just gives me more of a reason to run and cash the fucker and die! I'd sooner be dead than deal with the extreme anger I would have loosing my car because I did some "street racing" or was parked in a parking lot. I'd sierousley pop a blood vessel in my skull and die anyway or have a massive heart attack like my uncle did when the cops handcuffed him at his own rental home where the people wouldnt move out.

This is the reason I hate cops so much. Enforcing bullshit laws like this makes me HATE them with every bone and tissue in my body. They'd be sorry if they ever did that shit to me because I just dont give a flying fuck.

you are such a tool. next time a cop comes up to you, i'd like to see you tell him that you hate him with every bone in your body. and how would he be sorry? you going to beat him up?

:bowrofl: :jagoff:

it's not the cops job to interpret the law. it's their job to enforce it. don't like it, do something to get it changed, instead of running your mouth on the internet.

just a thought. :icon_idea

No your a towel. I'm not running my mouth, and I'm not bullshitting. I wont be kicking anyones ass. And I voted today so I count that as trying to change things.

If your stupid enough to take such a low paying shit job and put your life on the line to enforce laws you dont agree with, then your just a stupid fuck. Laws and cops exist to generate REVINUE for the government. Government is big business.

back in 01 when i lived in N.C, they did have drunk driving stings. they'd set up a road block and check everyone. sucks street racing down there changed. back when i was there, i got caught in my camaro MANY times, and was let off with a warning or just told to slow it down and take it out of town and race on a non crowded street. i never really spent any time where they are talking about, it was about an hour and 15 minutes south of me. this is the reason i am really thinking about building a track only car though...
