Stinky Exhaust

My 2004 Subaru Forester has that Rotten egg smell to the exhaust. Also it's throwing a code and when I read it there was a reference to the left bank 02 sensor. Does this generally mean that the sensor needs replacement? I forgot the particulars of the code but it def was regarding that sensor. No driveability issues. I believe it was code P1139, something about a heater range/performance issue in sensor 1, bank 1) or something to that effect.

Thanks gurus.

Brian.

yeah, it could be running rich due to the 02 sensor and overheating the converter. i'd get it checked out, converters are not cheap if it gets ruined

Also it being out of tune will cause a code and the converter to get plugged.

I would do a tune up and change the O2's and see if it gets rid of the smell.. if not its' going to need a converter.

an o2 heater range code is 9 times out of 10 a failer heater element in the oxygen sensor it self. This heater is only used during open loop operation ( cold start ups). It should cure your engien light but not that smell. Probably a converter issue is causing the smell

Any missfire codes ? rotten egg smell is typical or running lean or missfires. Running richs usually cuases the catalytic converter tempatures to drop unless you have a missifre from the rich condition. sometimes cats just fial to.
