Steve Lisk Hemi Challenger

anyone remember a guy named Don Toomey? He was a GM engineer in their race department and used to tell me stories of him taking factory race cars down to woodward. He has a few of them tucked away and brings them out once in a while.

I know Don. I was at his house a few weeks ago..... My Dad's Best friend since they were kids paints all of his cars.....

Hi All,
Thought I'd post a couple of quick update photos of the car. Got quite a bit done to it this past month. Installed new stainless fuel lines/AN fittings under the car, new battery cables front to rear so its at least a bit safer. Adjusted the coil overs down a bit over an inch to help the stance until I get the rear suspension restored back to original. Its not low enough yet, but close for now.

Also installed new 5 lug rotors, calipers, hoses, master cylinder. It had no brakes when I got it. Had the wheels restored back to their original machined finish, nice original/correct center caps, correct lug nuts, new tires. Used 30-13.5-15 M/T ET streets on the rear and Coker Firestone Wide Oval D70-14's on the front.

I think the wheel/tire combo turned out great. At least it doesn't look as homely as it did. The rear wheels are original. Remember, the fronts were originally 13x6" 4 lug, but no repro tires are available to fit them, so went with original vintage ET slots like them in a 14x6" size, so I could use a wide oval bias ply like Joe had on the car back then. The rears are almost exactly the same size he had on the car then. In the HRM article, it had Firestone Drag 500's in 29-15" size.

Next project is turbo removal and header fabrication. Once done, I can install the correct hood/scoop as original.

At least its a start in the right direction!

My driveway is a bit slanted, so it still appears a bit higher than it actually is when level.

Joe's Mustang

I wonder what happened to the second Mustang Joe had Roush build for him? It was a 1981 dark blue Mustang hatchback with a stroked 351 Cleveland.

You couldn't miss the wheels...they used 15" centerlines with TRX centers!

Those wheels alone are unique enough to make the car stand out.

I've only seen the one article on it titled "Flashback" from 1983 I believe.

Joe's other Mustang

The issue with Joe's other Mustang was the October 1983 issue of Hot Rod Magazine. Article titled "Flashback".

Wonder if its still in Detroit?!

It was a dark blue, 1981 hatchback, caged, 351C, coil overs, the unique centerline wheels with TRX centers welded in.

Took a ride out to 12 and Orchard Lake today and took some pics of the Old Nugget its a Mexican Resturant now Enjoy !!!!

This ia a great thread. I'm old enough to have been involved in the "you've gat a 12 sec car? That's flying!" crowd. This stuff brings back great memories.

Been a long time since I posted on the car, so thought I'd give an update.

I've gotten quite a bit done in the past 4 months.

Header fabrication done using Hedman components, 2 1/8" primaries, 3 1/2" collectors, saved the original 3" JR header mufflers and G&R pipes, ceramic coated the entire setup from flange to tip in the original flat black

Busted seat repaired
Seat covers repaired
Wiring cleaned up under dash (Oh,, the horror!)
Wiring cleaned up under hood, voltage regulator back to original location
Fuel system finished under hood back to original configuration
Trans temp gauge installed
New trans oil cooler installed
Fuel level gauge installed
Re-routed speedometer cable back to the original setup
Removed Winters shifter and installed original style setup shifter, custom heim joint linkage
Installed proportioning valve, re-routed and installed all new brake lines
Installed the old Roush Accel dual point/tach drive, Jones mechanical tach now working
Original SK water pump rebuilt/restored
All new correct radiator hoses
New thermostat (it was missing)
Battery box repaired/rebuilt
Missing dzus fasteners in rear under hatch area repaired/replaced
Hood mods completed to duplicate original setup (Harder than it looked!), hinges, latch, release cable done
Air cleaner modified to use until original can be duplicated
New comp engineering adjustable shocks installed in front

Also completed all needed repairs to horn, lights, wipers, etc to make it street legal again.

Now collecting/fabricating necessary parts for the rear suspension restoration back to the original setup.

Also waiting on a mint 69/70 Mach scoop to modify to match the original.

Thanks guys...its taken much more work than I thought it might to get the car back in shape to even be safe to drive, much less put back to its original configuration, but worth every busted knuckle! I feel I have a real responsibility to get it right. I'll get some photos of the outside again soon, once the scoop is back on it looking like it did back in the day. Maybe some black and white pics:-)
