SRT-4 as a Daily Driver...

Hey guys, currently I own an 03 Mustang GT that I drive daily through the winter. It has most of the bolt-ons and such, but I'm getting tired of driving a mustang every day. I'm looking for something a bit more economical. With the srt-4 getting better gas-mileage, slightly cheaper insurance, and having four doors it seems like a good car for me to get to work and school, I'm only 20 by the way. To those who own a SRT, are they good cars to drive daily?? And are they fun cars to drive?? I've driven one before, but I'm curious to hear from owners...

I have 100,000 on mine. I had to replace the coil and tires thats about it.
I have nothing to bitch about with this car.

i rock a 06 cobalt SS/SC out in the winter and it does ok, and mines pullied, with a crap load of other mods. but i think you better off driving the mustang through the winter because if you throw any mods at a SRT-4 it will be faster than your mustang. im not trying to sound like a dick or anything, but anyone with one will tell you that those SRT-4's take to mods realy realy well. were talkin 1500-2000 in mods and your goin 12's

just dont see the point in a 20 year old having a winter beater faster than his summer car, i mean that sweet V8 rumble isnt there, but the speed is more evident in the srt-4, i love the feeling of getting out of my trans am or my cobalt and getting into my Z28 hitting the gas and getting tossed in seat hard, i guess its just me, i like to have my "weekend car" faster than my DD, but i will give the balt this... i run down low 12 second cars from a roll and i still get 35 miles per gallon :) i guess to each thier own.

For a decent year-round car I would think its a good compromise. Yes it's wrong-wheel drive, but they are still a blast to drive. Out of the box they are as fast as your Mustang, and as with any turbo car, they take well to mods. I would make sure to look for at least an '04+ model as they came with the limited slip diff and the larger injectors. As long as you can find one that has not been beaten to shit, you should be able to find them for $10-12k.

I have just under 70k on mine and haven't had any problems. Normal brakes, tires, etc. stuff but that's it. All of my transmission issues came after the turbo upgrade had been in for a while. Either way there's a ton of tried and true set-up's for the SRT that you can easily daily drive with. Mine makes just under 400hp at 20psi and on Sunday I'll be tuned to 24psi and it's still my daily driver...has been for 2 1/2 years. Personally I find it easier to drive it every day with the larger turbo than I do the stock one.

I assume that you don't have money to burn as you mentioned that you are looking for something more economical than daily driving a Mustang.

If you're tired of the GT I'd sell it for something that better meets your needs or just get a beater (Focus, Saturn, etc) that is cheap and just use the Mustang when you're in the mood for it.

I think the SRT-4 is a nice ride for what it is, my only real beef with it is that I thought the seats were very uncomfortable. And the idea of finding a used one that hasn't been beat to crap would definitely be a chore.

I had mine for two summers running... Never had a problem with it while it was stock... Then I threw more and more mods at it... And I found basically every weak point there is... :icon_bigg

I say go for it. I was kinda in the same situaton as you. Have a 00 SS Maro and was daily driving an 05 Trailblazer. After gas prices kept shooting up I started going broke filling the friggin thing up so I started cobalt and neon shopping. Like mentioned above it was kinda hard to find an SRT that wasn't beat on. After looking at a couple SS Balts and SRT's I found an 05 SS supercharged balt for the right price and couldn't be happier. I never thought I'd be the one to buy a small car but 30+ miles per gallon in a quick (not fast) but quick car makes me happy. :_slide_:

Most people like the seats. I guess it's one of those things that you either like or hate...not much of an in between. Even with the turbo upgrade I can get an average of 20 mpg with some screwing around. Looking for one that wasn't beat on is always good, but they stand up so well to abuse you really don't have to look too hard. The obvious leaks and what not would obviously be bad, but you can get to around 415hp before the engine even notices. At that point you'll be well beyond need for a stiffer clutch, but that's really it. I've never had any real big issues other than the annoying little things from time to time.

For a fast daily driver you can't beat the SRT-4. Although, I'm still debating selling mine. $14,500 takes it :dunno:

Thanks for the input guys, but by no means do I want to get rid of my mustang for the srt-4. I love my car, but its just not the most economical car right now with gas prices and such. And It's beginning to get old and I just want a reliable everyday driver with a little zoom to it. I just dont want to sell my car for something that is slow as balls. It just seems like the srt-4 is a great compromise at this point in my life. Anyone know of a good place to find one??

I have quite a few friends that own them and well not one complaint!!

Its a monster waiting to be released :D

then again it still is a 4 door neon

Both have for sale sections and you can find a good/modded one every once in a while. I haven't looked at either in a while though. Honestly, if you find one in the area you want to look at just let me know and I'll go with you or look at it myself and let you know what I see/think of it. For the most part theres only a few things you need to look at and listen for. It isn't difficult to tell if it was modded and put back to stock or what general condition the car is in. Even modded ones are usually still in great condition.
