100-2 middle school hoops blowout may have repercussions
By Cameron Smith

There are routs, there are blowouts, and then there are epic one-sided losses that would make the likes of Woody Hayes blush. The 100-2 victory by Pikeville (Kent.) Independent Middle School against Kimper (Kent.) Elementary and Middle School at the Pike County Preseason Tournament falls squarely in the last category. Now, the school district's superintendent and school board are allegedly considering canceling the team's entire season because of a perceived lack of sportsmanship shown in the 98-point drubbing

.As first reported by ScoutsFocus' Joe Davis, Pikeville raced out to a 70-0 lead in the game by halftime, eventually cruising through a second half performance in which Pikeville coach Bryan Johnson allegedly told his team to "stop playing defense" in an attempt to let Kimper score. You can see highlights from the mismatch in the first 40 seconds of the video above.
To say that the game was always going to be a mismatch is an understatement. Kimper is a small school of only 180 total students, and features players as young as 11 on its squad. That's a start contrast to Pikeville, which might indeed boast one of the nation's most talented squads of eighth graders; the same team which routed Kimper rolled past Virgie (Kent.) Middle School 75-32 in the championship game of the tournament. The Pikeville squad consists of the best members of the school's sixth and seventh grade teams from the past two seasons, when Johnson served as the head coach of those squads. He also coached the most select players from those teams on the AAU circuit, giving the team a cohesiveness that stands in stark contrast to the Kimper squad.
As one might expect, the full statistics from such a one-sided romp are even more shocking then simply Pikeville's 70-point half. Perhaps the most astonishing is the following: Pikeville led 25-0 just 1:48 into the game, when the team dropped its full court press and Johnson removed all five of his team's starters. Do the math, and one quickly realizes that Pikeville essentially scored a bucket every eight seconds when its starters were in the game.
According to Davis, who was informed of the situation by Johnson himself, that first two minute span and the continued offensive performance by the Pikeville reserves has been enough to prod the Pikeviile Independent School Board into quietly considering canceling the entire Pikeville basketball season. Whether or not the school district would cancel one of its team's seasons because of a single blowout remains to be seen, but if ever there was a one-sided scoreline that could elicit such a response, the 100-2 rout might be it.
Still, while Johnson may have always been due the largest share of criticism for letting his team rack up a 98-point victory in a preseason tournament against an overmatched foe, the fact that the two teams were even playing in the same bracket deserves further inspection as well. Sure, the two teams play on the same Kentucky middle school circuit, but that hardly justifies setting the two up against one another when such a game isn't absolutely necessary.
Does that mean that the Kimper head coach, Chase Haley, deserves criticism himself? Perhaps, though it's hard to find much fault with a coach looking for somewhere for his young team to play games before the regular season heats up.
In fact, that might be the worst news for Kimper after the game: The team still has Pikeville on its regular season schedule in mid-December. Of course, that rematch would be contingent on the entire Pikeville season not being cancelled first, and that may be less of an eventuality than any of us might imagine at first blush.

I think the better question is why are these teams playing each other if they are so far outmatched. Why should the kids season be taken away because they have more talent and better coaching then other opponents.

You guys have a sort of idiotic take on this. The problem is not that the other team was way better, it's that moron adults schedule a match between a bunch of novice 11-12 year olds from a teeny tiny school against the best 8th graders (13+?) that play at an elite level for their age. They said they weren't even playing defense and the other team still couldn't score. I'm just spitballing here, but maybe if the kids can't score unencumbered, one of the genius adults should think twice about fielding that squad against the junior all-stars of America.

There's a reason they don't match heavyweights with junior flyweights. There's no nobility in beating the shit out of a wildly overmatched opponent that shouldn't be in the ring in the first place, and there's no nobility in remaining standing when you're an 11 year old that sucks at basketball that is probably only on the team because they needed enough bodies to field a team from your tiny school. It's silly. This is hardly on par with "everyone gets a trophy just for playing."

I mean, why not put kids from special ed on the stage and make them play round after round of Quiz Bowl against the AP students? Those slowmos need to toughen up!

The small school wasn't complaining. The school board from the 'good' team are having issues with this. Again, the game was scheduled. This sounds like it's a conference or league game. They're suppose to play again next month. I guess the only thing the good team could do is go into a four corner stall offense to kill the clock. But really at what point do you call off the dogs? End of the first quarter (half way thru the first half), the first half (like this team did), or at some other point?

they are both the same aged Teams..where does it say 8th graders??? ....6th and 7th graders is the article....I was in 6th grade at 11yrs old myself.

You are comparing apples to oranges....

they need to practice and get better...

YEP...
your right...puts things into different light. cant blame the kids...your right. league shouldnt have scheduled that

Ref should have called it at half time. Shit they call off the guys beer league baseball after one team is up 20 runs around here. Idk it sucks, its embarrassing but it is a competitive sport and if you can't handle it don't play.

Since the coach also coaches AAU teams, I wonder how many of those kids playing for him actually live in that school district?
I know a lot of basketball teams that have been formed via "schools of choice" and their AAU teams.

F* that. You play a full game no matter how embarrassing it is. That's life. You finish what you start.

I'm just delighted that schools are keeping score. I had read some time ago that they weren't .. you know, it wouldn't be fair for kids to realize that someone else is better at something.

This is a clue for parents with future athletes.
If you expect your middle and high school coaches to develop your kids athletically, it ain't gonna happen.
The schools with the most travel players almost always win.

^true you are right. Yea the not Keeping score thing pisses me off. Only sport that keeps score now for kids 5-8 is hockey in my town. Soccer, t-ball, football, basketball all don't keep score until the kids are older. Every kid gets a trophy at the end of the year no matter what. I was suprised when I went to my nephews mini mite hockey games they keep score an have play-offs and championship game. Lol I thought it was pretty cool and it seemed the kids tried harder to win compared to other sports I watched him play. Kids need to learn lifes tough and you don't always win, but to be sucessful you have to learn to put forth the hard work an dedication like it would take to win a game. This life is "fair" shit is getting outta control hense the occupy scum bags! Gimme gimme gimme! Bitch you didnt earn it like Joe did so guess what? TOUGH SHIT! Lol

This is one of the reasons i love hockey. Basketball and football seem like nothing more than tough guys showing off. Basketballs always gotten me though. If you get knocked down get your ass back up! no foul's no free shots etc..... pansy sport IMO. What does that teach a kid? if they get knocked down someone will blow a whistle and help them back up?

The kids ALWAYS know what the score is. So do most of the parents, there are always winners and losers.
The difference is what the parent tells the kid on the way home.
