So im buying a motor that was ina fire...what do you guys think?

Heres the deal, back in 2003 i dropped a 98 Gt motor in my car (99 v6) and its been running pretty strong with full exhaust and bolt ons it pulled 232 RWHP and 281 RWTQ with no tuning what so ever....well its started burning more and more oil everyday (rings are about gone) so im looking to do somthing over the winter.....Well a guy i know and have baught stuff off of over the last 2 years has a 02 GT motor that had approximatly 6,000 miles on it when he put it in his 99 V6 to do a swap like i did, well he had a bad thing happen and after driving the car for a few minutes he went in his house and came out and the car was burning, well to get to the point it melted down most of the valve covers, it had a saleen blower on it so there wasnt a plastic intake on it to melt into the ports, he said hed let me pick it up for $200, so should i get it and tear it down, clean it up, and throw some cams on it, and my nitrous kit i never used and call it a winter?

thoughts??

thanks,
ryan

BTW- will try to get pictures of the motor tonight..

I would keep the internals for now at least, basicaly just clean it up have it checked and get new vlave covers for it and throw it in, i only plan on running a 75 or 100 shot.... anyone know where and how much to have the important stuff checked out such as heads?

I don't mean to change the subject, but what makes you think the rings are your source of the oil problem? Do you have proper pcv and evac hooked up? It might be something simple and overlooked. Do a compression test on it and make sure somethings really wrong with it before starting all over again with a new motor.

I really am not sure, i just have had alot of people say my rings are most likely burnt up, when i got the motor is supposidly had 70k miles on it, i put about 20 on it since so i figured the rings would probably be about gone but maybe im wrong...i'll try to get a compression test to find out for motor resale reasons, but i want to do the PI motor anyway because its cheap, its 40-50 hp more stock, and it has less miles....i plan on spraying it quiet abit if i can get it running safely..

I would pry pass up on it if it were me. You would have to pull the heads and all that off to make sure nothing got down in there. You would need to go though all the moving accessories and pullies to make sure the berrigns were still good from the heat, NOT to mention if it got to hot under there i woudl imagine there is a possibility that it would have warped those aluminium parts on the engine.

Is it worth at least 200 at the scrap yard in case you tear into it and it is FUBAR'd? If so then go for it. If not, I would be wary about buying that.

the answer to the question of why the Car is burning oil is right in your post. Its a 98 model year engine. From what i have been told ford worked so hard on port tumble that the 97-99 heads actually create a fuel puddle/wall washing action on the thrust side of the cylinder wall cuasing excessive ring wear and oil consumption. A leak down test would easily illuminate if this is the problem.

I know for a fact the fire never got that hot, it was only burning for minutes, it barely burned up the hood, I would highly doubt that it warped anything so...i dono

IMO the 96-98 motors are pathetic slugs compared to the 99+ ones, so even if your motor was perfect, a 99+ would be a good swap. I think you should look around though, you may be able to find a good low milage 99+ motor for cheap.

i have yet to find any thing cheap as far as 99+ motors go, and i am extremely tight on money so thats why im looking into this, does anyone think i would be alright with buyin it, tearn it down and cleanin it up? i highly doubt that the fire got hot enough to warm the heads, he had a saleen blower on it that he had clean, powdercoated, and sold with no problems, so i think i would be alright.....anyone think i have a good idea, or does everyone think i should pass on it?

Pass on it... getting whats available just because you're broke isn't always the best choice. Believe me, been there done that. By the time you get that engine useable you could've just saved up a little more and get a complete 99+ engine.

the only money i for see having to put in that motor is some valve covers (probably like $50) and i will do some cams and the timing stuff so i dont know why i would have to have soo much money into it??? obviously it takes time to tear it down and clean it up and yes there will be some money in getting it all checked but i really dont think i can find a motor in my price range around here anytime soon...
