Some advice on trading in a used (modified) vehicle please.....

Hey guys,

I have a 2004 Silverado SS that is supercharged. It's been my daily driver for 5 years and has been an outstanding vehicle. However, I've found a diesel truck I'm interested in and I'm trying to figure out the best way to proceed.

I "believe" most dealers don't want to take in a modified trade so that is where my questions lies. Is that true? This truck looks stock and idles smooth like stock, just has an assload more power then stock.

I can de-modify it, but that is a PIA and time is of the essence.

The mods are:

Polished Magnacharger M112 intercoolered supercharger kit with 2.8 pulley
90mm tb and x-link with matching j-tube
Magnacharger fuel pump voltage booster
HP Tuners Custom tuned
Volant CAI
Pacesetter (coated) long tube headers - 1 3/4"
Custom 3" stainless exhaust with x-pipe
Exhaust is true dual all the way out to the back bumper with turndowns just barely showing. Mufflers are HUGE Magnaflows & (2) Vibrant resonators in each pipe. Mufflers and resonators are straight through design and didn't hurt performance at all.
Lingefelter GT2/3 cam and upgraded valve springs
Detroit Gearbox built 4L65e with all the best! Has everything done to it including sonnax's new input housing, billet input and output shafts, etc.
Circle D billet triple disc converter (2600 stall)
Replacement t-case from GM (@20,000 miles ago)
Electric dual fans
Bedliner and tonneau cover
Pioneer Premier head unit
Pioneer Premier DVD player
(2) 12" woofers

I took it to the track and it went a best of 12.20 at 110. Truck drives like stock until you get on it. Very nice ride. Body is in great condition with a few nicks here and there. There are a few small dings too that could be removed with dentless repair. I get complements all the time on the truck. People can't believe it has 185,000 miles. Truck doesn't use any oil either.

That said, trying to remove all of that would be a major PIA, but again most dealers don't want modified vehicle (I believe). But to take a dealer trade in price and throw in the fact that I have thousands tied up in just the trans and exhaust, not to mention the blower, etc.........would be a major loss.......

Thought about selling privately, but that can be a PIA with tire kickers and all that. Thoughts? Thanks.

I've sold one vehicle with mods and the other parted back as close to stock as possible. It makes a lot more sense to put it back to stock. I'd suggest pulling off as much stuff as possible that you feel is worth your time. From that list, I can imagine a lot of those items won't be easy or possible, but in the dealer's (or a buyer's) eyes, it makes it more appealing and might make it sell faster. Hope this helps.

That's what I afraid of, but I tend to agree. What about fixing stuff. For example, drivers seat (side of bottom cushion) has slight tear in the vinyl. Worth having it fixed along with a dentless guy popping out a few dings? Probably cost me 300-400. Not sure if it's worth it.

The PDR is worth it. They'll probably nail you harder on an appraisal than it'll cost you to do it yourself.

I hate to see it get parted b/c its all the best parts for that truck...If i had to guess it might get sold on ebay to some cat from the middle east LOL

E-bay is a consideration...

As far as what I would sell it for...................well NADA lists its value at $12,750 & Kelly Blue Book lists it at $11,476. With built trans (Detroit Gearbox), triple disc converter, stainless exhaust (Diamond Fab), Blower kit, CAI, Wideband gauge, Autometer C2 gauges (boost/vacuum & fuel pressure), electric fans, etc, all adds up over 15k. I have receipts for the trans/converter, gauges, exhaust, etc.

I don't expect to get what I have in it, but if you figure what I can sell those parts for and then the truck, you get an idea of what I would consider. I'm 42 and drive it responsibly. Don't get me wrong, I get on it occasionally, but I'm good to it most of the time lol! Truck is solid, tires were replaced last year, front end was ckd out and alignment was ckd too (have receipts).

I am open to reasonable offers as it will save me time having to put it back to stock. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks.

Dealer will fuck you if its modded. Return to stock sell extras make money and pay off need truck faster. Trust me it will make you feel a lot better in the end knowing your hard work wasn't wasted by giving your truck away.

Trading this in I would concider only as a last option.....you will get Lower then expected if this truck was stock...Let alone like it sits....you may even get less for it, due to the dealer not wanting to sell such a modified vehicle. I would really copy and paste that first post and put it in the for sale section here on Motown...And list it for a while on some websites. that truck as way cool, someone must be interested in it....expecially with its proven reliablity and great times.

I'd give you a stock air cleaner assembly off an 04 full size for the cold air intake. With some cash from me of course :D

Hi I'm new here, but from what I've heard dealers are nothing but scum bags that try and rip people off. :jagoff:

Sean my suggestion is sell it outright. We (scum bag dealers) don't like dealing with "modified" vehicles. The reason is we then have to sell them and are held responsible if anything goes wrong (as if we modified the vehicle). Of course most dealers will sell it "as is" but then you turn a lot of people off. It's a lose lose for a dealer to deal with a modified vehicle. The customer put a lot of time and money in the vehicle so they think they should get a return on their investment and the dealer then has to deal with a vehicle that may or may not be in reliable condition.

Also, dealers have a much harder time selling a vehicle with high miles.

Just .02 from a scum bag dealer that rapes women, steals from old people and kicks puppies! ;)

Shawn try to sell it outright first. I just sold my old 04, had it on craigslist and here and nothing worked out. Paid the 60 bucks to put it on autotrader and it was gone in a week. The truck is too cool to put back to stock. :)

What kind of diesel did you find?

Thanks man, good advice.

I actually have the stock airbox setup for it, but can't remember if I have the air inlet hose. I may take you up on that offer---thanks.

Solid advice! Thanks Matt---always appreciate your help.

Don't do it! LOL! That McDonalds guy gave me this advice years ago and if I had heeded it, my racecar, I mean Street car!!! lol would probably be running by now ;-) Your notch is more important.

I'd love that blower for my esv, this notch I'm building better be worth it

Yep, great site---thx.

That could be arranged ;-)

Hmm I could use the blower and trans..

Good advice---I've always sold my vehicles on Autotrader in the past. Worked great, but last one has been at least 5 years. Craigslist seems like a joke---full of tire kickers and scammers..... Did someone local buy it? Thanks for the kinds words---it is a ton of fun. I've surprised a few corvette owners (especially!), SRT8's, stangs, etc over the years.....lmao! Way more fun then the mustang in that aspect.... :-D I'm looking at an older LB7 Duramax. Only concern is with the injectors, but they shouldn't be an issue with this particular vehicle/situation. Excited about the prospects of a more mundane vehicle that gets great gas mileage, is comfortable & tows my junk well. What did you end up buying to replace the 04?

Do you like it? How's the mileage. I'm hearing 15ish in the city stock, closer to 19-20 hwy at 65ish....Is that correct?

With tune and some bolt ons, closer to 18-19 city and 21-23 or some cases even higher on hwy......Is that correct?
