How many of you used it ?

Have any of you used it for personal use, or is something that would be better for that?

any thoughts would be helpful...

Wow. I partially used a solidworks cad program in high school. It took a few days to learn the basic's, but it was way better than the other program we used.. I cannot remember what I normally used. You could draw 3-d models really easy, I did a paintball gun, and a turbo charger model with a couple weeks of playing around with.

For free, I've heard good things about Google Sketchup. http://sketchup.google.com/

I've always had access to Pro/E, I-Deas, or Catia so I've used those programs. Most 3D modeling programs are similar enough that if you're familiar with one you can fumble your way through the others.

I use it for work and for personal use.

If you have a .edu account email wise you can download it for free with a 3 year liscense. I have 2011 and 2012 right now. I like them both.

Great for parasolids (3D) and ok for 2d sketch ups. If all you need is 2d, any flybynight freebie cad will do. If your looking to go 3D eventually, Solidworks is a great software. It also comes with tutorials built in and you can use them to learn. Took me 2 hours to learn it, 2 days to feel comfortable enough to use it for work, and was fully functional after 2 weeks.

What are you planning on doing with it? Depending on what field you work in, it might look good on your resume.

We use Inventor which is very similar to Solidworks.....I do think most of the 3D programs are similar, but I have heard that Solidworks is one of the better ones.....

I was helping a guy with his project a few weeks ago and hated google sketchup. It's pretty difficult to manipulate.

Soildworks isn't bad to do the basic stuff. I think it's liked a dumbed down Catia.

Out of all the ones I've used, I think Solidworks is at the bottom of the list.

ProE
UG
SW

With that said, it's full functional so you can make it work. I just don't care for the interfaces and the assembly constraint system SUCKS compared to everything else I've used.

i am very good with 2d programs but 3d is new territory. Can anyone give me a quick walk through of solidworks. I got a full version and i need to learn it asap because gm is using more and more for there cad drawings.
