A young man of about 20yrs old with possibly a mild intellectual disability just came to the door selling candy and puzzles. I was working on my computer in the basement and my wife answered the door. He spoke very politily to her and asked if she wanted to buy any of his "stuff" (He gave great descriptions of the products he had.) He then asked that even if she wasn't interested, could he have a glass of water. My wife told him that she would get her husband (ME) and a glass of water. My wife came and asked me to see what the young man had for sale. I went to the door and the young man proceded to compliment me on the look of my house and then went onto tell me that he was selling the products to help with buying himself new clothes so his mother didn't have to work so hard to take care of him and so that he could buy himself a bike then he went into the descriptions of items he was sellng. By this time my wife had brought him a ice cold glass of Coke at which time his eyes got big and he repeatedly thanked her for it. While drinking his glass of coke. I looked at the items in his box and I really wasn't interested in any of it for myself but I decided that just helping him out by buying something was the nice thing to do. (All items were $8 each). I settled on some chocolate turtles. He was starting to talk about how happy he was to hear that the Lions won today to to make there record 3-0 (None of which I knew anything about, I don't follow sports). After about 2 minutes of pleasent conversation he said that he had to get on his way. After walking away about 15ft he turned back and said,"Keep an eye on those turtles. Don't let them walk away." It put a smile on my face. I came back inside and thought about the wonderful personality that young man had and made me reflect on all of the things I feel are important to me. When you think things are tough, stop and think about what other poeple, good people might be going through.
I wish I were in a position to help that young man by more than just buying a $8 box of candy. In a away, he helped me today more than I helped him.
