So, I have 10g's... and I want AWD... Subaru or Audi???

if you're not planning on modding it, i'd get an audi hands down. especially if you're knowledgeable about repairing them.

i test drove a WRX while shopping for my car, and as much as i like what the car was capable of, i felt like i was driving a tin can. rattly, noisy, and generally cheap feeling. sort of the fox body of imports.

the audi is a much, much nicer DD.

S4 brosif, all the way. You can prolly search the country and find an enthusiest owned one in great condition and stay in the price range.

an S4 isnt for a person with a $10k budget. not being mean, it just isnt. maintanence is very expensive, and they are quite temperamental. as a current audi owner, you must have gotten a good one. everyone i know that had a bad one, will never buy another audi again.  im assuming you have a B5?? i was looking into them a bit, and as far as quality and reliability go, i was told to find myself a B7 2.0T. those are supposedly much better than the previous generations.

as for subaru. its like the toyota/honda thing. they're great cars and they last forever. but if you've always driven heavier cars, it will always feel like a tin can to you. thats just how it is. doesnt mean its bad, or its cheap. it just is what it is i guess.

and yes, all legacys come with manual trans'. :D

if i were searching for a DD right now, i would certainly look into getting a subaru legacy or outback. even a forester would be nice. although i dont feel it necessary to own a car with all wheel drive. ESPECIALLY if its your only car. IMO, all cars should be rwd. BUT, if its a 2nd car, and you already have atleast 1 rwd car, i dont see an issue with having awd. :D

you may also be able to find a jetta TDI for 10k. might be something worth looking into. it surely doesnt have awd, but TDI with a manual trans will get you roughly 55mpg on the highway. :D if you could find a wagon with a 5 speed and diesel, send me the link. :D :D

oh, as far as the WRX, if your familiar with the terminology, watch out for the bugeye transmissions. obviously, being that the bugeye's were the first of the wrx's here, they're going to be the cheapest. they have been said to have "glass transmissions". just a heads up.

This is definitely more of a rumor than a fact. It's been brought up on the subaru forums and people that have the cars seem to have no problem at all. White Out can verify this.

You can always make a sweet German/Japanese hybrid. Scooby powered bug FTW!

this is BS. my rx-8 weighs quite a bit less than the WRX, and feels much, much, much more solid. i drove them back to back.

Personally I would say the subby
I have a buddy Mike with an S4 that thing is a pain to work on and has been a real headache for him, I feel bad actually.

I have 3-4 friends who have WRX's and I almost bought one personally.
They are reliable as heck, and if something breaks it is much cheaper and easier to fix.

If you want a DD thats fun and cheaper to maintain the WRX

Thanks for all the input guys...

I do on a B5 A4.. it has been rock solid ever since I bought it. IT was very well maintained when I bought it last year and have sucessfully put 40K on it in just over a years time with only having to replace the MAF sensor and 2 new tires I got from Ryelou. The interior of the Audi is just great.. very comfortable and very stylish. I have never even sat in a Subi so I cannot speak about the style or the driveablitily.

As far as the price of upkeep, that's all I heard about before I bought the Audi, but I accepted that fact and bought it anyways... As long as the Audi was taken care of properly (synthetic oil, timing belts changed etc..) there is no reason why it can't last to well over 200K, as mine most certainly will.

Keep the comments and suggestions coming, and if you guys find any of the cars you were talking about for around that price range, please post em up!!

Thanks!

Patrick

Try to pick cars that are at the low of depreciation. I like the e36 M3 because I dont think they will be worth much less then what you can pick a good one up for 5 years from now, look at the e30 m3. But that is not available all wheel drive.

Buy a ford

Would never buy another ford unless it was a Fox Body... and as you can see I'm looking for a DD... I buy another fox... and money starts to get thrown at it rather hap-hazardly... can't do that again... before its over it will have over 700 to the wheels and i will be flat broke AGAIN..

audi forsure, my buddy has one im not sure what it is, its a4 door awd twin turbo 6 speed and he revved it up dumped the clutch and the bitch spun all for tires. and sounded awesome when it spooled up i say audi forsure

i think it has more to do with who previously owned it, and how they drove it. granted there are many cases of long lasting bugeye trans', there are an abundance of broken ones. i would make damn sure teh trans and everything along with it checks out before jumping on one. maybe im just paranoid. you cant usually get a trans like i did for my bmw for $300. :D

it certainly isnt BS. the RX8 isn't your average car. the drivetrain is feather light, thus mazda was able to put a bit more into the body itself. the majority of cheap, econobox japanese cars are tin cans. i've owned several of them.

That's a function of them being cheap piece of shit econoboxes, not of being lightweight.

I had a B6 1.8T for a few years and it was a great car. It had some electrical problems but they were fixed under warranty. As much as I like Audis, I wouldn't want to own one without a warranty. As far as Scoobys go, I drove a regular WRX and an STi before I bought my GTO. The standard WRX is a cheap econobox POS. The STi is an interesting car but I couldn't see myself using one for a DD. Maybe it's because I'm in my 30s and wanted something more civilized. For a budget of only $10k, you're probably not going to find a lot of decent A4s or STi and what you do find will probably have a lot of miles on them.
