Small block swap. Ford or Chevy would be bitchin. I wired a 944 a buddy built with an LT1. Fun as hell car, he also did a wide-body conversion on the car, and a beefed up turbo transaxle, you could steer the car with the front or back. The 928's were always more of a Grand Touring car, not a sports car. That said, a mild small block with a smooth cam would make an awesome replacement of the V8 boat anchor in there. I worked on an early 80's one (think it was bumped a 5.0L in the 80's IIRC), and they were pretty bulky for the power output. Stockish cam LS with a smooth idle will move very nicely.
