so, got my hire packet today!

I know it is easy to get excited and trust me I am wishing the best. It is just you are so ready to buy a cobra, a house, etc... so quickly and you have yet to work a day on this job yet. Companies (some) will promote themself to get good people in a job market that many people dont want to do. It is like you interviewing for a job you try and sell all the great things about your self and what you can do for them, right? Well in the tough cut throat economic market of moving freight these days (Fuel surcharges, etc) it is hard to get in a cooshy place and make some good coin! I hire and quote a lot of freight companies and they in all honesty are not making a ton of cash (Milkruns, LTL, FTL, ODC Cross docking, etc..) The ones where I know they have you and can charge the extra buck is in the expediting area, but that is a spuratic niche market. Like I said I hope this is what you say it is because I am all for you spending your hard earned money to help better this crappy Michigan economy!!!

i guess i meant gps tracked. do they know where ya are at all times?? id want a company phone for sure, or at least reimbursment.

You get reimbursed for all of your expenses, and you get a fuel budget. If your a company driver they track you, but if your an owner opp they dont. I would call them and talk to them about the phone issue though.

Just make sure that they pay you. A friend of mine just quit a drving job because he couldn't seem to get paid regularly. He left their truck sitting at a truck stop in Arizona and took the bus home.

Good for him, a cool way of "STICKING IT TO THE MAN"

Hate to be the bearer of bad news. Plenty of Stevens Transport Horror stories...

"Just want to share my frustrating work in starting out. When you
graduate from school. No one will give you a nice job off the bat
in trucking. You have to pay your dues with a company like stevens or a
covenant where you are used and abuse at minimum pay rate it
would seem. they really don't care to keep you and they know eventually you
will quit. They will get hundreds of new drivers out of school each week. i
don't feel there is no real shortage of drivers.
they are interested in low rate drivers which the new recruits that cannot get
a job with a decent company that requires years of experience.
Stevens is one of the worst abusers of human beings around. They
know hoffa is not around to expose them and they are happy to
continue their profit margin which is over 90% on each frieght which the driver
makes less than 10% which might get him $400 a week.
I might had made a mistake in going into this business.I am going to drive for
an owner operator to drive one of her rigs for a percentage.
My calculations are around $800 a week on slow months and $1100
on good months if i was to use the average miles i was doing with
stevens.stevens i never did well even when i drove over 3000 miles.
They deducted alot of junk from the pay.and pay tuition is only $100.
enough said. I am not a negative person but i am just sharing the reality of
what has happened to me. When you run into a stevens driver, ask him for
yourself if he is happy with stevens. Average driver last 4 months with
stevens. Even covenant do better than that. "

i could throw a couple wrongs at that fom the company drivers i personaly talked to, but then again i hear horror stories from every company in any industry, so it doesnt surprise me. I feel very confident in the people and research ive done, so im positive im making the correct choice with this company, but i do appreciate the input!

I've always wondered whats the lease payment on something like this?

if i lease a brand new peterbuilt or kenworth which are between 150 and 180gs, that means my credit score will go through the roof!!!!

Ps. I work in the transportation industry and Stevens "seems" like a top notch fleet. Congrats!

Any Updates on this... How is it going for you?

.84 a mile. Wow. While traveling cross country listening to CB chatter guys would say they made .35-.45 mile which seemed to be more in line with what you think a trucker would make. Good luck, hope everything works out. But I would advise that you don't go out and make any big purchases (other than the truck) untill you are in and everything is going as expected.

I'm not really familliar with the trucking industry, but I always thought it was one of two options. Either you drive a company truck and get a rate per mile, or you have your own rig and work for yourself. What it sounds like he is doing is owning his own truck, and getting more pay per mile while working for a company.

and holy crap!!! Looks like my money is going to be real fricken good! The company i work for owns a truck leasing program, which is awsome that they do because they dont require down payments, credit checks, ect. So this means if i lease a brand new peterbuilt or kenworth which are between 150 and 180gs, that means my credit score will go through the roof!!!! That rocks and all, but the .84 cents a mile sounds good too, considering they guarantee me any where from 3200 to 3500 miles a week + the bonus program and the fuel expenses covered, and my truck will have a bumper to bumper warrenty, i think ill be set! Hey Matt Stanford, think you could work me out a price on one of those new cobras? Im serious, probally within the next 2 or so months ill need one, and yes i mean need! My suburban rubbs!

They are covering fuel ?? or are they covering IFTA ?? .84 seems a bit high for them covering fuel exspense.Whats the monthly lease payment ?

Truck abondoning. Hes not gonna work again unless its local. I once upon a time fetched those trucks oncall. Big $$$ to get abandodned loads. He would have been better off finishing the run and leaving the truck at a terminal unloaded and calling the dispacther. his DAC is gonna be very unfriendly for a hire.
