Snowmobile smoking

I recently purchased a Polaris XC700 which needed some work. I completely rebuilt the sled with all new hardware, track, rebuilt shocks, etc. The engine was all there but came in a box. I had the bottom end checked out at the local dealer and they said it was fine. I ordered a set of Weisco pistons and rings. Each step along the way I checked tolerances and such. All was with in spec. Now I start it up and its smoking like crazy. It isn't burning any coolant and the exhaust doesn't smell sweet or like its burning up. I know normally when you start a sled it smokes until it warms up but this is excessive and even after 15 minutes it's still smoking. Both at idle and when going around the yard. Seems to run fine though. Both cylinders had between 110-120psi.

Didnt you have some coolant down in the cases? If so, it will smoke more then usuall until its all cleaned out.Is the smoke blue or white?

I did have some coolant down in the case but it was maybe 1/4oz on each side. I'd think that burned up in the first minute or so.

I didn't think about the rings though. I think I'll go back outside right now and ride it around for another 10-15 minutes making sure not to go past 1/2 throttle.

I gotta find out if they have any trails around Rockford so I can take it on a small trail ride to see if it truely is ready for a long ride with some friends.

Could be a bit of coolant burning up from the bottom end.

Might smoke excessively until the rings seat.

LOL it's a 2 stroke ring seal or not, it has nothing to do with it there is no oil in the crank case just oil mist. More than likely it will stop after you ride it for a few min.

Well I've put an hour on the sled today and its still smoking. I'm confused. Isn't burning coolant or sucking down (what I think at least) an excessive amount of oil. Runs great besides looking like Cheech and Chong going down the trail.

If its blue, then its just oil.Maybe your injector pump is set too rich?Im not sure how to check a polaris though. On my Ski Doo, you line up the marks on the pump. How do your plugs look?

Plugs are a dark brown. Nothing that screams, "HEY MAN, I'M RUNNING SUPER RICH!". They aren't wet or anything.

The only trial I know of over there is the "White pine trail" that runs along Northland drive. I'm not quite sure how far south it starts, but if you can find it, you can ride it to Cadillac.

Is there still enough snow over there to ride?

If I had to guess I'd say my yard still has 5-6". Enough for me to buzz around the yard for a bit. I imagine the trails are completely shot though.

Looks like you would have to catch it just north of M-57. I read that you can ride it from Russel Rd to Cadillac.

Didn't know that trail went all the way to GR. I know it was in Cadillac and that it went through Big Rapids but I figured it had to of ended around Morely/Standwood. Thanks for the link!

I'm moving back over there in a week. When we get some new snow we'll have to hook up and ride it for a ways.

No problem man! I'll be sure to have the sled ready by then. It's running great (besides the smoke) and has the front and rear suspension rebuild with a new track and freshly rebuilt top end. I plan on riding it each day this week so when I finally hit the trail I'll have any barrels worked out.

Why you moving out to GR?

I'm from over that way(Lakeview). I moved over here for a Job. I'm now laid off from that Job with no chance of a call back. The mortgage company don't want to help out, so I'm walking, and moving back to peace and quiet. Its nice to walk outside and hop on your sled, or to have 20 lakes in 20 miles to take your boat. I HATE it over here.

I hear ya mn. I grew up in Cadillac and went to school in Big Rapids. I graduated with my prepharm degree. A company in Chicago said they'd pay for my remaining schooling if I signed a contract with them to stick with them until my schooling was over. Big mistake on their end. I hated Chicago so much I literlity quit 2 hours after I finished my last final and moved back to Michigan. I'm in rockford now because its pretty laid back but in 30 minutes I can drive into Grand Rapids andbe to work

Not related to your smoking (or maybe it is) a heads up for all you sled people. The fuel you buy at the pump sometimes contain high levels of alcohol, sometimes as high as 20+%.
This is a sure mixture for engine failure.
You can purchase small inexpensive alcohol testing "kits", at most lawn mower equipment places (3 for 10 bucks?)
Unless your buying separate cans of racing fuel, you need to test the fuel your buying at the pump before dumping it into your sled.
As far as your smoking goes, I know some two stroke oils smoke more than others, but it sounds like yours is getting concentrated in the Cly's after shutdown. Thats not such a bad thing to have happen.

I use marine stabil in all my 2 cycle engines.
