Snow Blowers

My dad is looking to buy a new snow blower for the winter. Haven't really researched these in awhile so don't know what companies to look at. Anyone get one recently or know the most reliable ones out there? he's looking to spend $300 - 400. Doesn't need to be a two stage or self propelled. I might chip in some if it looks like a good deal.
 
I did some research last Fall, but didn't end up buying one. My understanding for the single stages is that Snapper is the last company to not use Chinese engines. Craftsman, Toro, etc are all Chinese junk. One of those Snappers will cost you ~$4-500.

If you step up to 2 stage, the Ariens 2 stage at HD for $729-799 is probably a good bet.
 
I also heard that Ariens also uses Chinese engines so I dunno. I saw one with a LTC engine, same as Ariens ones. It was a 2 stage self propelled for around $500.

Anyone have a LTC engine in their blower?

I'll look into some Snappers in the meantime
 
I bought mine last year at Tractor Supply Co. I was told it was one of the last ones without the Chinese motors on it. They said all the new ones they had ordered had the Chinese motors on them. Really dont know how true it is, but it kicked ass on the 2" we had last year.....lol
 
The 24" Compact 2 stage for $799 @ HD is a Briggs & Straton engine, built in the USA.
The 22" Compact 2 stage for $729, I believe, is a Suburu engine. Still better than LTC/Chinese.
Ariens' cheap brand is Sno-Tek, Chinese LTC engines, also sold at HD.

The $500 Snapper single stage is a B&S.

Any Craftsman, Toro, etc. single stage will be LTC or some other Chinese engine.
 
I've had quite a few and my curry Toro single stage is the best. Throws snow more than 15ft. I'd bet it's more like 20 plus ft.

the thing you want to think about when you buy a snow blower is service!!!

snow blowers break!! I dont care who makes them

snapper and toro have the BEST service parts network!!

their service shop is daves engine and mower on inkster road at ann arbor trail

I have a Craftsman 2 stage. It has served me well, but I gotta get it repaired (if I cannot fix it myself). The auger is making a whining noise similar to the sound a gear drive would make.
 
I bought a large 2 stage Sno-Tek 2 years ago. It's a beast and always starts right up with no hassles.
I was hesitant to buy the LTC engine but all the reviews I could find were positive. It's been a good machine for me.
