SMS Through Gmail Chat [Google Is Unstoppable]

After years of using hot-mail & yahoo email accounts, i switched over to Gmail. And I have never looked back. I can’t even stand the time it takes to load your inbox page, with all the graphics/ads and pure crap that has to load with it. What is also awesome about Gmail is that they never stop improving it.

They have this thing called Gmail Labs, where you can try out special little tools to help productivity. Here are some examples: Mouse gestures, Keyboard Shortcuts, In Browser Chat, Labels, Canned Responses, Calendar Gadgets, Google Doc gadgets, and the most recent to be added, Text Messaging (SMS) in Chat.

I was really excited about this in October when they released it, but they quickly pulled back the launch after a bug was found by the google team just fooling around. But tonight, it finally re-appeared.

Googler Leo Dirac writes:

“We’re just trying it out for cell phones in the United States right now, but you can send texts to your friends with US phone numbers from anywhere in the world. You can start by just typing a phone number or into the search box in the chat window on the left, then select “Send SMS.” You can also select the contact you want to SMS first and then add their phone number.”

“On the receiving end, when you get a text message from Gmail on your phone, it will come from a number in the 406 area code. (The l33t folks in the crowd will note that this spells G0O.) You can reply to this text on your phone just like you’d reply to any other text. The reply gets routed back to our Gmail servers and shows up in your friend’s Gmail chat window. Each of your friends’ messages will come from a different 406 number so you can reply to any message and it will get back to the right person. Messages from the same person will always come from the same number, so you can even bookmark it in your phone.”

Not only is this a great way to get to friends on the go when you’re at your computer, but it’ll also save you sent message charges on your own phone bill.

gmail while using google chrome browser is the best experience out there IMO. I used to use yahoo and hotmail but they both suck now. Also what is really sweet with gmail is the gmail notifier that you install on your desktop and notifies you of email.

Gmail definitely looks cleaner than Yahoo mail, but I think I'll stick with Exchange. I've just never felt comfortable with my email being hosted on a server I have no control over.

I can see how you worry, but there are tools that let you download and back-up all your email and attachments. :omghi2u:

Google Desktop Tools are great as well. I can't live without my gmail notifier! LOL

I'm not so much concerned about data loss - that's what server backups are for. Plus I have absolutely no desire to have copies of my messages locally. I'm a client-server fanboy!

My concern would be more who all has access to my data. Plus I can't very well conduct business with a "gmail" address unless I wanted to come across as being Mickey Mouse.

I assume Google sells branded mail service, although I have idea what the rates are.. Might be something to consider..

Yeah, GMail is a great email app. Some of the features I don't really see a need for, like this new feature, unless you have to be connected with people 100% of the time. But it is neat either way.

You can also receive email and sent email from other accounts, right within your gmail account. All my professional email address are always forwarded and written right within my one gmail account. Not trying to fight you or anything, just letting you know of this option. And it's free.

This SMS thing is great for me because in my office I get 0 Bars, so when my girl friend leaves work to run errands, now i can just text her through my gmail. Because probably would of never gotten her texts. Damn warehouse.

I moved all my e-mail over to Google Apps (the paid version). You get 25 GB of space and some of the best anti spam I have ever seen for $50/year per account.

Just search "from: name" then select all and delete.

I <3 Google. Between Gmail, Google maps, and Chrome I have everything I need. Hell, they even have their own CAD package.

Exactly! I love the search mail option. Saves alot of time of searching thru hundreds of emails. And yes, I get spam, maybe 1 every two months. Love it.

FYI - Google Apps will allow you to use the standard suite of Google applications hidden behind your own domain name - inc gmail and web host. I just moved my personal domain to this service last month (free, btw). Got sick of upgrading and maintaining my FreeBSD server, sendmail, anti-spam, etc. Also a pain having to IPsec VPN into my home network to check email with Outlook.

The downside, as you said, is security... but this is just my personal email address and website. I don't really have anything all that confidential there anyway.
