slow starting 4.3 chevy truck

Hi tech helpers!

My work truck is ready for some love...been needing to pull the trans for a while to get some more forward gears working, but now it is tuff to start.

1996 silverado, 4.3 auto

turn the key and it turns over like a bad battery.
put charger on and it still barley turns over.
let it charge for a bit and it will still barely turn over and finally fire.

I was thinking the wire might have been fried from being close to the exhaust? but it looks good. Should I get a new starter while I have this one out or might it bwe another problem I am not seeing??

need to get this thing to start good so I dont feel bad about putting a trans in it

if the starter is out it wouldnt hurt to get it tested.
but to me it sounds like the cable going to your starter has to much resistance, measure the ohms on it.


also check and make sure you dont have a dead cell on your battery

I had a similar problem with my Mustang. It was really hard to start (especially hot) like the battery was dead. I replaced the battery and the cables and it turned out to be the starter. Put a new starter in and it starts like a champ.

I had this happen on my 4.3. It killed the battery, an eventually burned up my alternator. I got pissed cause took the startEr in an had it tested and they said it was good. So I replaced bothe positive an neg cables an still no luck! Now I was really pissed so after I cooled down I said screw it an replaced the high dollar Bosch starter with a new one an it's worked great ever since!.

Check your connections to make sure they're not dirty on the battery/starter. If they're clean, pull the starter and get it tested. Obviously disconnect the battery first.
