I also have a Sony HVR-A1U that I use for professional recordings and events (weddings primarily) I brought it out to a track event once and would never do it again as it does great recording but I find my portable to be perfect for track events.

I love the Sony's because they use the carl zeis lense (glass to some people) and they are AWESOME for night. I also have a Canon XT1 Digital SLR for the pictures I take, I haven't really mastered either yet but was having fun with both this year. If you are looking for a good camera for the track I recommend anything Sony, if your want to go with an HD camera like my Sony ENSURE your computer has enough power to edit .MTS diles (Sony's uses the WORSE format). I did a lot of research before buying both of my video cameras, I also have a Sony SD camera laying around that me and JohnQuick going to try to make a cool mount for and getting some kick ass footage next season.

Last but not least editing software is huge as of now I don't really edit any videos as I would my events or what not but I plain on possibly getting a bit more into it I have a Macbook Pro that allows me to use Final Cut 7 and Motion and I also have a PC which I use the Sony apps as they work best with .MTS side on the PC side, adobe premiere is also really good just takes a little bit more time to learn.

If you need any software ill be more then happy to help ya out if you have any more questions let me know...

Look at how nice the A1U shoots they are the best bang for your buck, but again my battery only last 2-3hrs and when your running around the track, going back and forth to the staging lines, hopping on and off golf carts, 40-50 degree weather the last thing I wanted was that big ass camera on my shoulder
