Well something is wrong I think it is in the timing it is backfiring both exhaust and carb. tried moving the distrib and almost had it going but no luck

Question: on a msd distrib. does it matter how it is facing on the engine? the wires on it are comming out of the front, does that matter as long as the pickup is facing the correct way?
 
To be honest if its carb, you can drop the dizzy in in and spot it dont matter engien at tdc or not...

As long as you change the wire orientation on the cap to match.
 
backfiring out both? hmmmm. The dis should work as long as the rotor faces the #1 plug wire when #1 is at TDC
 
kinda sounds like you have it 180 out, make sure its tdc compression stroke both intake and exh valve closed then make sure the rotor is pointing at number one on the cap. Then check firing order on cap preceeding the number one to verify, clean plugs try again.

compression stroke number 1 piston at the top correct?
if so I have tried.
