Selling/Shipping Car to Hawaii: How to be protected?

A guy from Hawaii and myself have been going back and forth with pictures and descriptions. He has decided he wants to buy the car (or has decided I am a good person to try to scam). He got a shipping quote from shipmycar.com for $2000 and has no problem sending me the money for the car any way that I want. So what I'm asking is what is the safest form of payment and how long do I need to wait before the money is 100% legit and in my bank account for good. I told the guy that I was going to take zero risk in the deal and that might mean he has to wait several days before the car shipped depending on when the money was finally "real."

I know there was a thread a few months ago about this but I didn't keep up with it as I never figured myself to be doing a deal like this but it's the only legitimate bite in a good while so I'd like to at least pursue it until it's clear it's a scam.

Thanks,
Sean

Can a wire transfer end up having the person refunded though?

not that I know of.
I sold my last TTA and a couple days later the guy had buyers remorse but it was SOL as far as my bank was concerned.
If there was overt fraud and the funds we're pulled from a third parties account without authorization I suppose you have some risk but I've never heard of that happening.

I told the guy there would be a chance I'd have to wait several days and he seemed to understand. He looked me up on paypal, ebay, and etc and saw I never had a problem so I think he's comfortable with the fact that I'm not a con-artist.

DO NOT take paypal, eBay or ANY sort of check (certified or otherwise) for an out of state sale if you can't afford to loose your cash. TRUST me I've had close to 1500 in paypal chargebacks this MONTH people can print checks on a laser printer too, I know a few guys with really nice worthless 40 or 50k checks pinned up on their cubicle walls.
One Check even spelled "the Bank of America" wrong LOL

I think we're going to go with a wire transfer...talked to the guy again and he seems legit but good con-artists seem legit up until the point that you've been screwed over. lol

I sold my car and insisted on a cashiers check. I also told him that until my bank was willing to hand me that sum in cash that I wasn't making a move.

It ended up taking 10 days if I recall to get the check cleared up and the funds were good.

Wire transfer went through today. Car will be shipped to Hawaii sometime next week (place was closed by the time the transfer was through so he said he would call on Monday and get the details).

Ask for a postal money order...
Money was already wired to a secondary checking account that I created yesterday (so I didn't have to give him the account that all my direct deposits, mortgage payment, etc) are linked to...
