Self employed people: What health insurance do you use?

Personally, after going through a major procedure without insurance.... I feel as though insurance is even more of a rip off.

I racked up almost an 80k debt with Henry Ford for surgery. I pay them $300/mo interest free to pay off that debt. You are pretty protected in Michigan as far as health debts go.

As far as protecting assets... a simple Umbrella policy for anything above and beyond a certain amount is a good idea...

You know how long it is going to take you to pay off 80K!

Who cares? It's either that or pay twice as much for insurance in case something happens... lol

You are the reason insurance is so expensive.

and if your accident or whatever happens again? Wow, now your up to 160K!
Not to mention if he passes away god forbid... His family just got the burden of his medical bills...

I dont think they can go after the family since he is over 18....seperate entities...

anyone know for sure?

No, they can't do anything to my family over medical bills. I also have life insurance should I die, that stuff all gets paid anyways. Plus, I have enough insurance elsewhere that they pretty much can't do anything.

Until there is a reasonable alternative between super expensive insurance for the self employed and cheap insurance that doesn't do shit, I'll take my chances.

Besides, even having insurance doesn't really mean much these days. Case in point. Brother and girlfriend have a baby a few years ago, Brother has insurance for himself, Girlfriend has insurance for herself...

Pregnancy got complicated and some things were not covered on hers, they tried to bill his, and still denied. Long story short, close to 200k in bills, insurance paid for 75k of it, they freaked out not knowing that as long as you have a payment arrangement set up, they can't do shit, and ended up putting like 15k of it on credit cards, etc... and took out interest loans... ended up being a bad situation.

So they are paying whatever they pay combined in insurance, like $200/mo, on top of the 125k in unpaid hospital bills, on top of interest on loans and what not.

So yeah... I am not thrilled about insurance.

If I had a family like Raj though, my thoughts would be different. Not so much covering bills, but protecting assets.
