With these gas prices I'm very tempted to pick up a Scooter. Most of the roads I travel are under 45mph. I know 49CC or smaller = No Motorcycle license (do you still require Insurance / plates?). I also plan on the kids being able to use it. Thoughts?

DetroitStyle should have his Honda Ruckus by now. Fits exactly what you're looking for. $2k brand new if you can't find one used. Plenty of mods available if you want them. He said something like 90mpg. I was tempted myself.

as soon as I have the money ill get one. im thinking of something maybe a bit bigger though (i know require a license) so i can go highway too.

I work 7 miles from work and wouldn't need something to go above 50. How fast will the Ruckus go? I thought DetroitStyle said like 46 or something.

I recall 90MPG and like 45Mph which would fit the bill to a tee. 2K purchase wil take me 2 summers to break even with the gas savings. So if I get 4 year out of one. I'd be up 2K

i love my yamaha zuma! its got a bunch of stuff done to it though so it's a little quicker than stock.

i never had any insurance on it, but you have to have it registered and get a sticker to put on it

never mind. i heard people talking about them goin over to 4 stroke with the zuma, but then they discontinued them after 2005 and then the c3 was suppose to be the replacement in 2007, but now they have the 08 2 stroke zuma back.

i could be wrong, but this is what im getting from the yamaha website......

Says 123 mpg!

under 49cc and max speed of 35mph means no endorsement or helmet needed(over 18 w/ drivers license) , AFAIK, no insurance needed, but there is a license tag you get at the SoS, something like $15 for 3 years

over 35 mph probably means you need a helmet

2005 yamaha zuma bored to74 cc with some extra mods and 60 mph no insurance helmet suggested moped sticker only 15 bucks 3 years

As My Dad used to say "IF YOUR GOING TO DO IT, THEN DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME"
Forget about Mopeds...........unless you insure it and yourself.

Most of my reasoning is because, If Not being fully insured is appealing then consider riding one of the slow 35mph mopeds in traffic with people getting pissed off, then if someone runs your ass over your fucked! It is not a very wise choice.
I would rather see someone get the 250 ninja and be fully insured and with a helmet on too.
Then you could do more with the 250 and not just be stuck in town, commuting would be far safer on the 250 since you could keep up with the flow of traffic and outpace it if needed.

Kawasaki has cheap plans for like $49 a month on the 250cc Ninja with a $100.00 down!

Used ones are a great alternative also, if it were me..
I WOULD GET THIS ONE FOR $2200.00

The above is an 07 and still enough fun factor..

I have a Kymco ZX50 I'd probably sell if someone wants to spend some money. It is unrestricted and has some upgrades:

70CC kit
Exhaust pipe
Dellorto aftermarket carb & reed valve
high stall clutch
CVT roller assembly replaced for higher stall
Kevlar belt for CVT

It has a max speed of about 55mph, also has oil injection but I pre-mix it just to be safe. I haven't used this in a long time and the battery is surely dead. It's registered as a moped as well, stock displacement was 49cc and that's what the state sees it as.

I'd probably want around $1500 for it :(
