Rust proofing?

Alright i bought the new escape earlier this year and i'm probably going to have to keep it for some time. I am considering having some place like ziebart rust proof the damn thing. Is there anyone on here that has any experience doing this stuff. Do they drill holes to get the stuff inside the panels? Is it even really necessary any more. I've heard that it may void the manufacturers rust through warranty, trunk would hopefully know something about fords stand on that. A friend can get me the stuff that body shops in the area use but i will have to do it myself and i'm not sure i know all the areas that need to be addressed.

It is a waste of money. New cars have way better rustproofing than Ziebart will provide, and every hole thy drill is just a place for moisture to get in and cause issues.

x2. if you actually want to make a difference, goto Windsor and get it oil treated. they just put it on a hoist and spray it down underneath with oil. works awesome. Ive got a 185k mile rust free 94 Cherokee because of this.

I have seen some of these oil coated cars, and it really does work great!

It used to be called texaco grease IIRC. 3m now sells this rustfighter stuff that you spray on the inside of panels and such, have a buddy that swears by the shit. You DONT have to drill any holes or anything like that, just remove the door panels to get inside.

It sounds stupid but the cleanest car I ever owned was a 1992 Talon that had some stupid electronic rust-prevention device on it, can't remember the brand. It was from the Traverse City area and it didn't have one spot of rust on the body.

We use an outside shop. They use this grease/wax stuff that coats the inside of all the panels. No drilling. They also have a rustproof/sound barrier stuff they apply to the underside of the vehicle, again no drilling. They both work well.

Ford has a 5yr unlimited mile rust through (must be a hole) warranty.

Save your money. Do not do it.
I worked in the industry for a few years, I'd never have one of my vehicles sprayed.

?? Do you live in Michigan? Vehicles rust. Period. Maybe not in the 5 years the manufacturer warranties for, but it will eventually. Not to mention the undercarriage, everything will turn into a big rust infested pile of shit.

they don't drill to rustproof anymore....its worth doing, some cars don't rust some do, but it keeps the undercarriage all nice and black looking

i've seen lots of newer cars with rust on the seams where the metal comes together on the bottoms of the doors (chevy hhr) and on truck tailgates and quarter panels (dodge ram)

all the floorpan seams and frame seams will rust underneath also, my bosses h2 has that

i think new cars rust worse than older ones

my brothers 02 cougar has no rust (car that doesn't rust)

my 2010 ram will be getting undercoated

The above is exactly what my moms 2007 impala (lease) looked like at the bottom of all 4 doors, and the trunk lid. She got it in NOV of 2006 and after the winter of 2006-2007, not even a full year, this stuff popped up.. My parents were going to buy the car after lease until they saw this shit. They loved the car, but said screw it, if that was going to be a sign of things to come.

My car is a 2000 and isn't rusted. I have 2 very small spots that were chips that rusted. There is no rust at all on the underside of the car.

I think there was a thread about this not to long ago as well.

No shit? Really? I've never had a personal vehicle rustproofed. IMO it does more harm than good. If it works for you, knock yourself out :D

Some cars dont rust, but I bet alot of the chassis components underneath are.

What kind of harm do you think it could possibly do? My Mustang was rustproofed back in the day and doesnt have 1 spot of rist on it. Now how many fox bodies do you see that are rotted the F out. ALOT, and majority of the people that own them havnt driven them in the winter with salt.

My stang was done back in the day as well. It has only seen one winter and that was down south when i was in the military. I think the new rustproofing that the oem's put on the vehicle is better than what we had back in the day. So i'm just not sure if it is necessary anymore. I know i don't wash my vehicles as much as i did years ago.

Aside from a terrible mess making maintenance and other work more hassle, plugging up factory drain holes. It's been stated above that more and more late model cars do a better job of protection.
Also, it does nothing for the rust that starts from the outside of the car, chips in the paint, rockers etc etc.

Personally, I've never wanted it. Again, if you like it, do it :D
